Speaking of old MC homes, there's a big white, White-House-looking home on Boyd Circle at the curve between...Lawndale and Garrettson. That house used to be on Franklin St. where what became Walters Clinic was built. I remember sitting on my bike watching them move it up Barker Rd. It was quite an operation.

Was the gold mine the gold mine before it moved to next to the corndog place? I remember it used to be on the other side of the mall in a normal store front but can't recall if it was called the gold mine. During the 1950's and 60's I would stay at my grandparents cottage on stop 2- can anyone remember the well known fish/perch and shrimp place that was located on or near a bridge near a river? We are all trying to remember the name. Thanks

I remember Wonderland on Mich Blvd. I used to buy Wacky Packages from a store down the street.
Shopper's Fair turned into the United Skates Of America. Gold Mine used to be the Library in the mall. I loved Colonial Bakery, the lady made the best glazed twists, gingerbreadmen, and eclairs I've ever had in my life. Is Rose Bowl gone? What happened to the bowling alley? Is there just one bowling alley in town now? I remember Baskin Robbins (or I'm thinking of a different area) as being Bressler's 31 or 33 flavors (or some name to that effect). Used to like their bubble gum ice cream. Here's a few of mine (if I say something that is actually still around I apologize) Danner's The other game room it was next door to the Robin Hood. It had black and white lines going to the entrance. That was the first place I played Space Invaders. I not sure if this was mentioned but don't know if Dunes Theatre is still there. Before they would show a movie they would show that little projector that would shoot out the balls and the music. I still remember that music theme. Thom McKan (sp?) Delaney's Furniture Al's Furniture Mart Michael's Home Furnishings Kmarts ham sandwichs, you'd buy a row of six or so in a plastic bag. Anxious Al's used cars The putt putt golf and driving range next to anxious al's Bassett Lincoln Mercury Ulrich's Paint and Glass Meyer's Paint and Glass. I know there is still a Meyer Glass but it's not the same, the nice guy who originally owned Meyer's died in the 80s. Swartzlander GM Don Jones Datsun Rusty Jones (hello rusty jones, goodbye rusty cars) The electronics store on Mich Blvd, I think it was by the chinese restaurant. I bought a Technics linear tracking turntable from them in '83, still have it. Blieden Cameras G&G Photo (I think it was called G&G), best camera store in MC. Bought a Minolta XG-1 from them, don't have that anymore. Kienetz's, was a little grocery store in Trail Creek. Zip's Convenience Store Mobil gas on corner of 20 and Johnson Rd, used to buy pop in bottles there. Ole United Cigar shop on Franklin Square. They used to be on Franklin St by a Shell station, but they were a different name then. My Dad used to bet football and horses there. Wonder if you can still bet football under the table in MC. Jim's Fiesta Villa Gilbert Television Robert Hall. I used to love the woods behind Robert Hall. Robert Hall closed before I moved out of MC. Disc Records Hook's Drugs. You could actually buy chemical ingredients off the shelf. I bought sulfur and salt peter and made smoke bombs. Joy Manufacturing Phillips 66 Clark Gas Station Sullair GD Ritzy's Brown's Fried Chicken |

Wow - great list! Sullair's gone? Really? What happened, I wonder. Here's one that was there and now isn't. For a very short time there was a small trampoline area between the north end of Park N Shop and Carlson's. I seem to remember a lot of injuries, forcing its demise. |

They have a few sites here...2 on Michigan Blvd (looks like one, but they have seperate buildings) and another on Hwy 12. Yes, Rose Bowl is gone. It's now a Salvation Army on one side, and AJ's Bar on the other. The Johnston Family closed it when they moved their operation to City Lanes (located on Woodland Ave). We still have two bowling alleys--City Lanes and Suburban Lanes. |

Furness and or Ritter. The Furness family still owns a good deal of that area between where the 12th street bridge was and where Blocksom is.

Nah, those names don't ring a bell. Thanks anyway. It was so long ago; many memories such as the great fireworks they would have every 4th of July, we would all sit on lawn chairs on the beach and watch the display, b-k root beer stand at stop 2 and the little grocery across the street run by Belle and her husband. Just curious, what does stop 2 and the beach area look like these days? Haven't been out that way since 1969.

It's been fun following you guys! What memories!! After racking my brain, I've come up with some places that I don't think have been mentioned.
Remember 8th Street Cafe? The basketball team ate there after away games. The Other Side--wasn't it Buzz Russell that had a band that played there Pezzuto's grocery |

I remember my mom and dad talking about The Other Side. My dad was considering opening another venue of that type for young people to have a place to go, but the insurance was astronimical!

I wasn't aware of a 12th street bridge Perhaps you meant 2nd Street bridge? Perhaps that's why my first apartment at 11th and Washington always had a damp basement...LOL. "If a man opens the car door for his wife, it's either a new car or a new wife." - Duke of Edinburgh.

That's it. It was called The Other Side because it was on the other side of the tracks.

That's it. It was called The Other Side because it was on the other side of the tracks. At least that's what Mom told me. I remember riding past that place when bands were playing - the inside looked all purple and smoky - like a Dean Martin/Matt Helm movie. You could kind of see the band - as a kid, it was pretty intriguing. |
