MICHIGAN CITY — U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will visit Lake Hills Elementary School on Wednesday morning to highlight the school district’s partnerships with community organizations and higher-education institutions.

“We extended the invitation to him, and we’re just thrilled he’s able to take time out of his busy schedule to be here,” said Betsy Kohn, Michigan City Area Schools spokeswoman.

Duncan will tour the school, which will be designated a science, technology, engineering and math magnet school in the fall, and give a short talk to area leaders, teachers, parents and students about the role they have in renewing and improving schools, Kohn said. Mayor Chuck Oberlie also will attend.

For several years, MCAS Superintendent Barbara Eason-Watkins worked under Duncan when she was chief education officer in Chicago Public Schools and he was in charge of the school district.

Duncan’s talk, which begins around 9:35 a.m., will air live on Channel 98 and on the MCAS website.
