Does anyone have suggestions for a good, no-nonsense webpage to view national & world news without enduring large splash ads and annoying advertising coming up while trying to read something? CNN was pretty good, but now a large full screen ad comes up sometimes when opening the page. Very annoying and distracting! And, of course guaranteed to NOT have me interested in what's being promoted. Only thing more annoying is on Comcast, when they put ads or logos down in the corner of the screen during movies, etc. and also when the volume automatically kicks way up during some advertising slots. I'm sure these annoyances will only get worse instead ot better, but I'm betting there's some good news sources out there, at least for the present. . . . . .

I feel like it's necessary to point that without the advertising, there is no content. CNN.com is still the king, putting up with the occasional ad just comes with the territory and keeps the news coming.

Pick up an ND!

Okay, that was bad....

I read Yahoo News on my cell phone on the train - the ND as well - no ads!

I second this. You can also pick key words and any stories turning up with those key words will register on the site. For instance, I have a "michigan city" setting, so any stories in any newspaper that register those key words show on the feed.

Just a note to say 'thanks' for the suggestions on where to go for quick, up to date news. Google News is excellent, and there it was. . . . . . hiding in plain sight! The Drudge Report is quite a site (sight?) also.

The best part about it is that it is totally customizable. If you don't like something, drop it. If you want something new, add it.

Google News is a good way to go. But I also like using a feed reader, like Bloglines or Google Reader--just get the stories sent to you, without all the nonsense.

At home, I run Firefox with the Ad Block Plus app. It makes the Internet a happy place again without all those ads. Adam's right though, that that's stripping the sites of the revenue that sustains them. Tough one.

The design choices on Drudge Report make my eyes hurt wink.gif

That's for the Ad Block suggestion, Michelle. I'll try that. I hate all these ads.
