PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 17, 2010, La Porte County, IN:

Democrat Laporte County Commissioner Mike Bohacek announced today that he will seek re-election to the District 1 La Porte County Commissioner’s seat in the 2010 May Democratic primary election. Bohacek is currently in his first term as county commissioner in this district.

Bohacek prefaced his decision to run for re-election by saying he would like to have the opportunity to continue to have a positive impact on the county and leave a legacy of positive change.

Bohacek is pleased with the progress the county has made in the last three years. Just last month the county entered into an agreement with the economic development departments of both cities to combine our efforts under one common voice. So now when a prospective employer wants to invest anywhere in LaPorte County the process just got a lot easier. This is the very type of collaborative effort that I promised during my first election.

With the help of our newly created Human Resources department we now have an environment where all of our employees are treated fairly. We have restructured the Health Insurance program for our employees providing them with a more comprehensive plan while also reducing costs for the tax payers.

The county now has a state of the art 911 center that is expandable to meet the counties needs now and into the future. This center now handles all emergency calls after the integration of Michigan City 911 last year. The integration of laptops into the emergency vehicles of the county and the two cities further demonstrates the continued synergies within the county.

Bohacek admits that there is much more to be done to keep the county on track and moving in a positive direction.

We need to continue to seek out creative ways to stretch our tax dollars. One such proposal is an onsite employee health clinic. Clinics such as these result in reduced health care costs and increased health and productivity of our workforce.

We are all in this together and I ask that LaPorte County, Michigan City, City of Laporte and the various towns form a formal purchasing committee that exploits synergies where our massive combined spend can help stretch each tax dollar.

As the unemployment rate continues to remain in the double digits we need to look within the county to create jobs. I propose a “LaPorte First” program where local vendors are given priority access to opportunities to service the county. If a local vendor can supply the good or service at the same price and quality then the business should go local, without exception. Attracting new business is an expensive and lengthy proposition the best opportunity for job growth is with our local employers and we need to support them.

Bohacek is a married father with two daughters age 10 and 8. Mike is a self employed logistics consultant working through Echo Global Logistics. He holds degrees in Economics and Finance from DePaul University . You can contact Mike at 219-861-6399 or email at electmike2010@yahoo.com
