MICHIGAN CITY — Well, that escalated quickly.

Northwest Indiana went from having zero food truck festivals to two this year.

The Michigan City Food Truck Festival is planned for 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 27 and 28 at Fedders Alley Beach in Washington Park, 115 Lake Shore. Organizers plan to make it an annual event.

"Ok foodies, here we go!" organizers said on a webpage for the event. "Michigan City kicks off its inaugural food truck festival featuring gourmet food trucks, live entertainment, games and more."

Food truck festivals have taken off in cities like Indianapolis and Chicago, where the Logan Square Food Truck Social for instance drew thousands of people last summer. Food trucks also been a staple of many Region summer festivals, such as Griffith's Rock 'N' Rail Fest and Hessville's Live in the Ville.

In Northwest Indiana, Michigan City's new fest will join the NWI Food Truck Festival that will take place at 11 a.m. June 17 at Founder's Square Park, 6300 Founders Square in Portage. Organizer Monica Jimenez-Susoreny said that festival, originally slated for Schererville, will happen annually in the summer and possibly more times throughout the year depending on how the first one goes.

The Michigan City Festival is looking to host 20 local gourmet food trucks, and will announce the lineup later.

The event will be free, but require a ticket. Beer tickets cost $5 and wine tickets cost $7. VIP tickets are $10, and include a drink ticket and dedicated seating for the event.
