Weather camera now atop Blue Chip

Published: Thursday, September 2, 2010 5:11 PM CDT
MICHIGAN CITY — A live weather camera has been placed atop the Blue Chip Casino Spa Blu Hotel Tower to provide a new window on the weather for WNDU-TV viewers.

“The Skyview 16 camera ... will help us to show our viewers the weather, particularly severe weather, as it moves in from the west,” StormTeam 16 Chief Meteorologist Mike Hoffman said. “It’s a perfect complement to our network of live Skyview 16 cameras.”

The new Blue Chip camera joins nine live Skyview 16 cameras across five Michiana counties. WNDU-TV viewers will often see these live cameras in daily Storm Team 16 forecasts. And when severe weather threatens the area, StormTeam 16 meteorologists often use the Skyview 16 cameras to show viewers approaching storms.

Views from the new Blue Chip camera and other weather cameras also are available online at wndu.com, Hoffman said.

Callers used to ask on soundoff why WNDU or WSBT never had a skyview camera anywhere in La Porte county and the reason they would give is that they felt that most of the viewers here watched the Chicago local news. Glad to see they finally put one here, it will be great that everybody will be able to see all the lake effect snow falling that we get every winter. They should have one atop the La Porte Hospital too.

This brings another good topic is Michigan City really considered as "Michiana", "The Region", "Chicagoland" or "Harbor Country"?

According to Geoffery Baer on channel 11's Chicago Tonight the term "Chicagoland" was originally invented by newspaper baron Robert R. McCormick as a marketing scheme in order to boost the circulation of the Chicago Tribune.

I feel more a part of Chicago than I do South Bend.

Um... Yeah.

But how are you supposed to watch the weather when all you can see is the water?

Me too, mostly because of the whole central time zone thing. But I feel Michigan City is part of the so called Northwest Indiana "Region".

Pehaps WIMS could put a weather cam across the street atop the historical Warren Building point it up Franklin Square toward the library, make that old bucket useul for something.

Nope... it will be ice.

Maybe, if we're lucky.

It was considered the "Chicagoland area" when I was growing up. The reason was we could get the Chicago stations on tv. I couldn't pick up any South Bend stations except for a very fuzzy PBS.
