Stephanie Naumoff, director of Michigan City's Footlight Players production of "Cabaret," likes to think the beloved musical has aged well over the last four decades.

"The show has lasted so long because the plot includes critical pieces to a successful musical: a love story, a conflict, some intrigue and, of course, singing and dancing," she said. "The music itself is the driving force to the show. As such, it has changed multiple times through the years to adapt to the times."

Opening today and running through June 21 at Michigan City's Footlight Theatre, "Cabaret" tells the tale of Sally Bowles, a young English dancer at a Berlin nightclub who establishes a relationship with American writer Cliff Bradshaw as the Nazis begin to gain control over Germany.

"Cabaret" was a Broadway hit when it was first brought to the stage in 1966 and was a big screen smash six years later, netting Bob Fosse a best director Oscar and Liza Minnelli an Academy Award for best actress for her performance as Bowles.

While older audiences have embraced the musical over the course of the last 43 years, Naumoff expects younger generations of theatergoers to appreciate "Cabaret" now and in the future as well.

"Cabaret has always appealed to all audiences because of everything that is involved," she said. "Seasoned audiences enjoy the look back into a darker era. Younger audiences will relate to the similarity by which these lives mirror their own."

Next up for Footlight Players is a production of the musical "The Apple Tree," scheduled to open Aug. 7.

"Cabaret," 8 p.m. today, Saturday and June 12, 13, 19 and 20 and 2 p.m.
Sunday and June 14 and 21
WHERE: Footlight Theatre, 1705 Franklin St., Michigan City
COST: $12
