The weather in Wyoming was beautiful this past weekend. My mother's day was great. I hope all the other mother's here had a wonderful day with their children and I hope everyone was able to let their mother's know how much they are loved and appreciated.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend. Mine here wasn't too bad. Casper does this "oldies" thing for Memorial Day weekend. The whole weekend is centered around a classic car exhibit on Sunday at Fort Caspar (the original settlement in Casper). Friday there is sign-ups for the show and all the cars are on display. Then Saturday is a classic car parade with a Sock Hop Saturday night with the car show on Sunday. The Sock Hop raises money for the Humane Society and my boss is the president of the Humane Society so I was pretty involved with the weekends festivities. The Drifters played at the sock hop and I made my daughter this really cool poodle skirt. She was totally into it and it was a lot of fun. But what was so very disappointing is that the Drifters were not giving out free autographs. You had to buy their stuff to get their autograph. They were charging $20.00 for cd's (with only ten songs on it) and $7 for a poster (11X17). Absolutely rediculous in my opinion. Needless to say, we didn't get any autographs. I suppose I wouldn't have minded too much if a goodly portion of the gross were going to the Humane Society, but the Drifters were only giving 6%. Then they wanted Humane Society volunteers to sell their stuff for them!

Has anyone looked at the online News Dispatch today? They changed the format. I really like it. It will take a little to get used to navigating the new site, but the changes are pretty cool. The best thing they did was eliminate "Feedback" and replace it with the Anvil Chorus. Yeah!!! Now I can finally start reading all those letters you guys talk about! too bad they didn't do that before the elections so I could read what people had to say about that.
Oh well. It's done now and I, for one, am happy with the changes.

Posted by: JHeath May 30 2007, 09:36 PM

Ang,
I just looked at the site--you're right, it's pretty nice. Similar to the old one in some ways, but definitely better.

Also, there's still a feedback area, only now it's called "Soundoff": http://thenewsdispatch.com/main.asp?SectionID=4&TM=84626.77

You can have your anvil chorus, and leave your feedback, too. biggrin.gif

Posted by: southsider2k7 May 31 2007, 06:25 AM

I went ahead and changed the title of this thread... This is now the place for whatever you want to talk about, whether it is relevant or just what you had for lunch today. Enjoy!

Posted by: Ang May 31 2007, 08:57 AM

I didn't realize what that was. I never clicked that link yesterday. I checked it out today and they have a webmaster review all postings before they are posted. Excellent idea. They should have done that a long time ago. Hopefully this new format will work for them. I'm just tickled that I can now read the Anvil Chorus.

Posted by: Ang May 31 2007, 09:05 AM

I changed my avatar again. I decided with spring coming on, that winter scene was a little too bleak. This picture was taken on Casper Mountain looking out over the City of Casper. I did not point toward the downtown area, not that you could tell anyway, but it's a beautiful view. If anyone is interested, I have a lot of pics posted on my facebook account. Send me a PM and I'll send you the link....

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik May 31 2007, 10:42 AM

Posted by: Ang May 31 2007, 11:40 AM

Thanks. The countryside and the lack of humidity are really the only things keeping me here right now. I really miss the beach. sad.gif

I can tell you that the beach was really nice this weekend smile.gif The baby had a great time playing in the sand.

Has anyone driven 11st Street between Franklin and Michigan Blvd lately? WOW, its like a tank went through there. That road is god-awful right now. Anyone know if there are plans for a repave?

Major Work Planned On City's East Side

Rick A. Richards

Motorists on Michigan City's East Side will find the going difficult later this summer as major work is planned by both the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District and the city.

NICTD, which operates the South Shore Railroad, told the Board of Works and Public Safety on Monday morning it will replace the rails on its commuter line between York and Spring streets.

South Shore officials have told the city the work will be done from June 11 to 22, and that several intersections in the area, including Lafayette and Cedar streets, will be closed.

At the same time, city officials said 11th Street between Franklin Street and Michigan Boulevard will be rebuilt, starting after the Summer Festival Parade, which is July 7. Once work starts (tentatively scheduled for July 9), it will take seven to 10 days to complete.

Lou Pinella is the problem there, not Zambrano or Barrett. After years of having it easy under Dusty Baker, that clubhouse is in full rebellion against a guy who not only doesn't make it easy and protect the players, but he calls out the players on their lack of basic baseball skills. If Lou stays, he will need a whole new roster of players to win anything there.

yesterday I wore a skirt, tank top and sandles. Today i am wearing pants, a sweater, socks and shoes. It's snowing in the western part of the state and in Jackson Hole it's only 36 degrees right now. Casper is at about 45 degrees and raining. They say we could get snow also. BUT, tomorrow it's supposed to be in the upper 70's. Go figure.

Aaaahhhhh, I love the mountains!!

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jun 7 2007, 08:40 AM

It is supposed to be 92 here today with 40 mile per hour winds and gusty thunderstorms... this could be an interesting day.

Posted by: Ang Jun 7 2007, 09:29 AM

40 mph sustained wind is typical for this area. We get that almost daily, and add 60-70 mph gusts. When you guys had that storm last August, I remember thinking, "That's nothing!! We get that almost every day in the winter."

On an average day in the summer, we have about 10-15 mph wind and the winter a typical day is 30-40 mph with 50-70 mph gusts. When it comes to windy cities, Chicago can't even compare to Casper.

Posted by: Ang Jun 12 2007, 10:30 AM

HEY!!! Where is everybody?

I'm coming home for vacation. I'll be there for the 4th and stay long enough to go to the parade. Does anyone know whent the fireworks are? Hopefully the 8th? Fireworks here are lame, lame, lame. Like watching the neighbors' in my back yard. Last year I was so utterly disappointed. I'm a fireworks fanatic. I love them like a child.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jun 12 2007, 10:44 AM

Sorry Ang, fireworks are July 15th. They never schedule them around the 4th, they always shoot for a nuetral weekend to draw in the touristas.

Posted by: Ang Jun 12 2007, 11:31 AM

I know, but the summer I left they did them the day after the parade. What a rip.

Yeah, I guess I missed that part... All of the pop ups really make the site run slowly as well. I do like the layout and the information better, they just need to get more space on the server for users if they are going to add pop-ups.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jun 18 2007, 09:02 AM

Actually going out on the pier on the 3rd/4th is a great place to watch fireworks from. You can literally see firework shows from Chicago to Michigan.

Posted by: Ang Jun 18 2007, 09:36 AM

I know. it's just not the same as when they're right over your head. Since I made that last post, I learned my cousin in MI, who is a pyrotechnician, will be doing a show in Buchanan. So, I think I will go there. I can ride with him and they will be literally, right over my head.

Posted by: JHeath Jun 20 2007, 08:16 AM

I'm not sure if anyone here has been to the LB fireworks. When you sit on the golf couse (behind the community center/old Long Beach school), they ARE right over your head. If you know someone who lives on the golf course, even better!

Either way, we'll all be here to welcome you home, Ang!

Summer started yesterday, UTC 1806, CDT 1:06 pm.

Today in history: 1941, German invasion of the Soviet Union, 0345 local time.

Posted by: Ang Jun 25 2007, 04:06 PM

The weather in Casper WY today is 95 degrees with 5% humidity.

Michigan City is 85 degrees with 55% humidity.

I don't know if I'm going to be able to breath when I get there next week. I might have to bring an oxygen tank or something. Between the thicker air of lower elevation and the humidity, I'll be struggling for sure. Good thing I quit smoking!

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jun 26 2007, 07:49 AM

Ang: I got a compaq presariio c500 with vista op sys from the stre formerly known as pc depot. It works great and was inexpensive. However, I do like how win98se looked and worked better than vista. It does the same stuff as far as I can tell but more user-friendly-ly (take that, grammar freaks!)

Bring some oxygen because it is not yet 9 cdt and pushing 80, with enough humidity that the next sneeze will start a thunderstorm.

Yeah. I take 25 to Cheyenne then 80 all the way to the toll road. Coming back though I'm considering taking 90 and stopping at Mt. Rushmore. The kids have never been there and my daughter is just fascinated with the place. We have lots of tourist ads here in t.v. for South Dakota and she gets excited every time she sees one so I'm thinking of surprising her with a visit. Personally, I'd like to go to Deadwood.

Hey Southsider!! Welcome Back. How was your vacation? Did you make it to Gettysburg?

Posted by: Ang Jun 30 2007, 02:54 PM

Ang, are you incommunicada while in MC?

Posted by: Ang Jul 11 2007, 02:32 PM

Hey!!! I'm back on the board and back in WYO. Wow. What a trip. I stayed in Porter at my dad's and he doesn't have a puter so could only check in from time to time when visiting others.
While it feels good to be back at my place, I am terribly homesick for Indiana already (I haven't even been back 24 hours) so I have decided to return--for good. My current lease is up in November, so I will come back then. But, I think I'm going to change my status from "City-zen" to "Cheesehead" and live in Chesterton, or Porter. At any rate, I'll back.

I did spend some time in City, and I'm sorry that I didn't get a chance to meet with any of you. I was SO BUSY the whole time, and staying in Porter made it hard to see everyone I wanted to see in MC. A few things I did see and would like to comment on:

1. The lakefront looks nice. The sand was very clean and looks well maintained. Of course I walked out to the lighthouse (and got a couple nice pics which I will post in the MC pics thread), but I parked at Galveston and walked. I didn't want to pay for parking to only be there an hour or so. All in all, I was pleased with the condition of Wash. Park, except that water pond thing they have. The water was gross with gunk floating on it and there was no circulation of water so it was stagnant. What a waste of a beautiful idea.
2. Striebel Pond just looks like a marsh or boggy area. Are they done with it? Can you swim or fish in it?
3. What is with that big honking behemoth called CVS? OMG, it's huge and looks grossly out of place where it is. Do they really have enough business to support a store that large?
4. I visited the Blue Chimp (good one Rog, I like that)and didn't spend one dime at the place. I walked all around and listened to some stupid band wearing afro wigs and multi-colored bell bottoms. They did 70's music but I was not impressed. Hope none of you play in that band-if so, I mean you no disrespect, I just didn't like the band. I only stayed for an hour and drank water. I will say that the girl who waited on me was lovely and had a very sweet personality.
5. THEY REARRANGED MEIJER!!!!! I couldn't find anything in that place.
6. Is Marquette Mall even open? I didn't go in, but the parking lot was always empty when I went by, except by Applebees. My son went there and he said half the stores are empty.

That's about it. Good to be back on the board. It's funny that I was there and so out of touch with every one. I missed you guys...

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jul 16 2007, 05:40 AM

I almost hate to say this, but I can't wait for the SuperWal-Mart to open up, because shopping at Meijer just drives me nuts anymore. I have never shopped at a place that so consistantly has empty shelves. We went Saturday afternoon/early evening, and it looked like a hurricane was coming as bare as the shelves were. Its annoying because you look at the Sunday sale ads and expect stuff to to be there, and it never is.

mad.gif

Posted by: Ang Jul 16 2007, 07:35 AM

That has always been my biggest problem with Meijer. They put stuff on sale and never have enough product to support it. So, when you go there a day and a half into the sale, there's nothing there. I noticed that hadn't changed when I was there last week.

Posted by: Ang Jul 17 2007, 12:40 PM

I've only gone to Dino's late at night after a night out. The night people are wonderful. Espcially the waitress Tammy. I don't know if she's still there as it has been over two years since I've been there, but I used to tip her HUGE--sometimes her tip was more than the bill she's THAT good.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jul 20 2007, 08:17 AM

Food is meh, but it is cheap. The breakfast is probably the best thing they serve, all though they do really good hot roastbeef and turkey sandwiches, served with mashed potates over bread.

I recommend the rosemarina soup. It's to DIE for!!!

My little birdie flew out of the nest today. I'm so sad. He went off to job corps in South Dakota. I'm at work trying to concentrate but I'm not having much luck with it. I'm dreading going home to my empty place. I still have one more at home and she isn't coping too well with her brother leaving. If any of you are praying folk, please include him in your prayers. He flew out of Casper this morning for Rapid City. He had to go to Denver first (?!?!) and switch planes to fly back this way to Rapid City. That makes no sense to me. He's never flown anywhere, especially alone. He's a big boy (17) but a mother still can't help worrying. I'll be restless until he calls me to say he's there. So, please pray he has a safe journey. Thank you.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jul 24 2007, 12:53 PM

The flight thing isn't odd. There are a few "major" airports that pretty much every flight is going to go in or out of. Denver is a big stopping point for anything between LA, Chicago, and Atlanta. We just never notice is because being here we usually fly out of ORD anyway.

I can't imagine having a child leave the house! Good luck to him.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jul 24 2007, 01:02 PM

"Office Honister! I don't know how that alcohol got into my system. I don't know how that cocaine got into my pocket. I'm not as think as you trashed I am."

What a joke. These celebrities today are a travesty. I use them as an example to my children on how not to behave. The sad part is that my daughter loved Lindsay Lohan and is pretty much devasted by her recent arrest.

Yeah, I totally agree with that. And Nichole Ritchie should be behind her in line, with Brittney Spears behind Nichole. I know Britney hasn't really broken any laws, but she should go to jail just because she sets a bad example!

Remember that that judge was letting Miss Hilton leave jail and the public outcry stopped that.

It wasn't the judge who let her go, it was the sheriff and the judge was very angry and considered holding the sheriff in contempt.

Although, I can get as much done in two hours on Saturday as I can in four hours during the week. Especially cause there is no phones to answer and no calls to make! Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jul 31 2007, 09:36 AM

Well, Cubs did not win. They are one game behind the team from the state north of the state to our west. They are a 1½ games behind in the Wild Card (in 5th place!).

I am curious about Southsiders negativity. Is that just the typical White Sox fan's antipathy to the Northsiders? Just for the record, I am an NL fan because I do not like the DH. Like most of the Cubs fans I know, our attitude re the Sox is best described as indifference. Why Sox fans are so unnaturally hyperventilated about hating the Cubs is bizarre.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jul 31 2007, 09:47 AM

I think it is different working/living in Chicago, where the rivalry is a lot more intense. I hear just as much talking from Cubs fans, as I do from Sox fans. 99% of it is in good fun, just like in any other rivalry.

We have a good debate going on the Chicago Bulls fan site that I frequent about this deal. Its pretty evenly split between people who think that the are the favorites in the East, and people who think they are way overrated. I think it gives them instant credibility as they have three players who can get it done. The lose all of their depth, but how much do they need with those guys each playing 40 minutes a night?

(AP) "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts had "very successful" surgery for breast cancer on Friday and has left the hospital for home.

Roberts, 46, revealed her diagnosis to viewers Tuesday. She said doctors believed they had caught the cancer early.

An ABC News spokeswoman said Roberts' mother and sisters traveled from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans to be with her for the surgery. Roberts has said she has no family history of breast cancer.

She has been an anchor at "GMA" since 2005, and had been a newsreader for the program.

When she made the announcement, Roberts said: "I am so blessed that I found this in the early stages and the prognosis is so promising that my doctor expects me to be flying planes and hanging on to submarines in the middle of the Atlantic and scaling the Mayan pyramids in no time."

Roberts, who is co-anchor of "Good Morning America" with Diane Sawyer, said she examined herself and found a lump on her breast the same day she had done a report on former "GMA" movie critic Joel Siegel, who died of colon cancer last month.

Roberts, who is single, said there is no history in her family of breast cancer.

Sadly there is no doubt in my mind that all of the non-public areas of NW Indiana would be superfund sites if the businesses on them were too leave. Places like the steel mills and refinaries have done god-awful things to our lakefront, which we have ignored because of the higher paying jobs they have provided.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Aug 7 2007, 08:12 AM

Do you think that would be true of nearly every industrial site? We cannot expect zero-impact industrialization, and in the past, there were few restrictions on waste and fewer who really cared. Fortunately, things are not so wide open now, and the impact is controlled. Remember the orange snow in Gary? I do. Next door to the Nipsco building on Greenwood, we used to play in the water-logged woods, laughing at the colors in the water--probably pcb waste! Cleaning up a few gas tank sites is small potatoes (or small beer, as they say in England), especially for a bank.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Aug 7 2007, 08:27 AM

The chemicals used in the steel making process are every bit as toxic as those that come out of the refining process. Granted it isn't as bad as it used to be, but some of those sites are over 100 years old

I pulled a similar stunt when I was about 5. We lived on East 8th catty corner from Central School and I was in trouble for something, I can't remember what, so I hid in the laundry basket and covered up with the clothes, then promptly fell asleep. My mother looked in the closet but it didn't occur to her I was IN the dirty clothes. She was frantic. Did the same thing as this woman. People were scouring the neighborhood looking for me. After a couple hours I woke up, went to use the bathroom-none the wiser to what had been going on. When my mom heard the toilet flush she came flying into the bathroom in total hysterics. I'll never forget that.

Lost, Then Found
Mother said she searched closet where girl was napping.

Jason Miller
The News-Dispatch

MICHIGAN CITY - A nearly three-hour search for a 4-year-old Michigan City girl ended abruptly Tuesday night when the girl suddenly appeared in the front door of the Greene Street home her mother thought she'd walked away from hours earlier.

"She fooled us," Heather Dickey said of her daughter, Tateyana, who apparently was hiding in a closet while police and neighbors searched for her. "She said she was in the closet the whole time. She's sneaky. When I turned around and saw her, my heart just dropped. I picked her up and didn't let go."

Police, city workers and neighbors searched the city's West Side for more than two hours Tuesday night for the young girl who was thought to have walked out of the Greene Street home her mother, sister and her mother's boyfriend were visiting.

During the height of the search - which included police K-9 units and officers on off-road vehicles - Dickey told The News-Dispatch she and her boyfriend had walked down the street to get something to eat, leaving Tateyana and her sister in the home with another woman.

Dickey said when she got home, the girl couldn't be found.

"The girls were upstairs when we left, and I guess she just snuck down the stairs and now we can't find her," Dickey said around 6:30 p.m. "She's never done this before. Usually, when she doesn't know the neighborhood, she always stays in the house."

Just hours later, though, as Dickey sat on the front porch of the home talking to people aiding in the search, the girl walked down the stairs and onto the porch, shocking her mother and everyone standing in front of the house.

Apparently, her mother said, the girl was in a closet which she said had been searched several times after Tateyana went missing.

"I was sleepy," Tateyana said late Tuesday as her mother held her tight.

Michigan City Police shift Capt. Larry Kunkel said police began their search for the girl around 5:52 p.m. He said officers asked Dickey if the house had been searched, and Dickey "was adamant (the family) had searched the house," he said.

"We had emergency management, the city chaplain, city employees and neighbors all searching," Kunkel said. "We got a really good response from the neighborhood and the city. I'm glad it turned out the way it did."

During the search, police combed several West Side neighborhoods and got help from many neighbors who searched through groves of trees and inside the perimeters of several factory fences.

Debbie Griffin, who lives on nearby Claire Street, feared for Tateyana as she and several other neighbors stood watch just a block away from the Greene Street home.

"This is scary," she said. "I hope they find her. We're always watching and worrying about the kids around here."

Montana police nab man suspected in Moorcroft heist
By DAVID MIRHADI
Star-Tribune staff writer Thursday, August 09, 2007

Police in Butte, Montana on Wednesday arrested a man suspected of robbing a Moorcroft bank the day before.

Kevin J. Fuller, 40, apparently drove into town shortly before 1 p.m. to drop off a hitchhiker he'd picked up in Billings when officers from the Butte-Silver Bow sheriff's patrol stopped to question the driver and passenger of a Chevorlet Malibu in a parking lot, according to police reports obtained by the Montana Standard newspaper. The plates on the vehicle did not match the vehicle Fuller was driving, police noted, and Fuller was subsequently arrested.

Fuller, of Anderson, Indiana, had apparently robbed the Pinnacle Bank in Moorcroft the previous morning. A release from the Moorcroft Police Department issued Tuesday said that Fuller entered the bank at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, brandished a handgun, and demanded money from bank employees. He placed the undisclosed sum of cash in a bag before summoning employees to a basement bathroom before leaving the bank.

Moorcroft Police Chief Ed Robinson said the Gillette office of the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation was also working on the case.

Fuller, according to reports in the Montana Standard, apparently fled the medium-security prison in Westville, Indiana on August 1. He is also believed to be connected to robberies of a bus driver in Merriville, Ind., and a bank in Fishers, Ind.

The America's Most Wanted website listed Fuller as a wanted fugitive on its website as of Wednesday and he was featured on the program as recently as August 4.

On Wednesday, a district judge in Butte ordered Fuller to be held in the Butte jail for up to 30 days without bond, the Montana Standard reported, until he's extradited to Indiana to face charges there.

Reporter John Grant Emeigh of the Montana Standard contributed to this report.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Aug 10 2007, 12:20 PM

Hey, you know I don't get upset about spelling and grammar, but a newspaper should be accurate.

Incidentally, that is how people pronounce Merrillville. This is another example of why English spelling is standardized in spite of pronunciation. Can you imagine trying to spell phonetically if we agree to go by the local pronunciation? We would be unable to read what North Carolinian mountain folk wrote. Or imagine the difference in the orthography when Geo. Bush changes from his regular accent to his Down Home Texas routine (another way to know when he is lying, by the way).

Posted by: Ang Aug 10 2007, 01:32 PM

You're kinda right on the pronunciation thing. I said Merrillville over and over a few times, and while I do pronounce the L's, it's very slight and I can see how someone might miss them. STILL. It would be like if someone spelled your name Kapootnick. One should ask for the spelling... I always do. Even if the name is Smith, cause it could be spelled Smyth

I can't wait to hear all the details of what life is like living at Job Corps. We talk on the phone, but so far all he does is complain (typical teenager!). I just listen with my "Mommy Ears" tell him to look on the bright side. He may have structure and discipline (They even tell me what time to take a shower!!), but at least he gets to wear what he wants. I remind him that he could be in bootcamp instead preparing to go to Iraq to fight (?) in a senseless war. It doesn't help, though, he still complains. So, before I go, I am going to hang the "No Complaining!" sign on the door.

Roger started a pet peeve thread, and I have a huge one, but I didn't want to put it in Roger's pet peeve thread, since it's mine and not his wink.gif, so I thought I would put it here.

I hate people who do not have conversations on the phone, they text instead. Wouldn't it be so much easier to pick up the phone, dial a number and have a 10 minute conversation than to spend an hour texting back and forth to say the same thing? I met this guy who wants to date me, but instead of picking up the phone and calling me, he will only text. If I try to call him, he won't answer. Then a few minutes later he'll send a text asking me what I wanted. So impersonal!!

I realize there are times when you only want to pass along a message and texting is convenient then. But to only converse through texting is childish and immature IMO.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Sep 13 2007, 09:15 AM

Its a mindset, and part of it is generational. Our parents generation thought nothing of walking a couple blocks to meet with someone, and thought calling was rude or unnecesary. Heck half of the time I am way better with email and internet than I am on the phone, because of either bad signals or being at work. If he seems like a good guy, I wouldn't think too much of it. If he is really a jerk, you will see it manifest in other forms, and then you will know it isn't just a quirk.

Cops: Mom Spiked Applesauce With Prozac
Woman said she administered drug to help 12-year-old daughter sleep

SEPTEMBER 14--An Indiana woman told police that she spiked her 12-year-old daughter's applesauce with Prozac because the child had trouble sleeping. Karen Walsh, 51, was arrested Wednesday and charged with a felony neglect count for giving her daughter the antidepressant for about the last six months. According to a probable cause affidavit, a copy of which you'll find below, Walsh knew that it was dangerous to provide the child with Prozac, which had been prescribed to Walsh herself. "I was just trying to help her sleep and I guess I should not have done it," she told a Johnson County Sheriff's Department deputy. Walsh, pictured in the above mug shot, gave her daughter about five milligrams of Prozac nightly, sometimes mixing the drug into the child's applesauce. (2 pages)

My mom is calling Verizon today to see how to stop that. Has anyone else had this problem?

Ew. Hopefully you aren't on a pay by text plan... That sounds like a nightmare.

Posted by: Ang Oct 8 2007, 10:39 AM

I have the unlimited "IN" texting and 500/mo. out of network, and I don't text a whole lot, so it isn't costing me money. It's just a pain in the arse to get spam texts. How rude!!

Funny story, I just came accross this article on MSNBC today.
Even funnier is that I know one of the people mentioned in the article... small world.

http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/09/text-spam-for-s.html

QUOTE
They are unwanted messages on what might be an unwanted service, but you may get stuck paying for them anyway. And depending on your carrier, it might not be possible to opt out of text message spam.

After years of trying, spammers have finally figured out how to crash the text message party. Cell phone text spam is much, much worse than e-mail spam, junk mail, or even telemarketing calls for one simple reason: Recipients have to pay for it.

Perhaps you were among the thousands of cell phone users hit with spam text messages late last month. Starting around Aug. 20, a message hawking stock in tiny Fredericks Entertainment landed on cell phones provided by many carriers. If you read Herb Weisbaum's ConsumerMan column last week, you know that victims of this widespread attack must call their carrier to seek a refund or credit.

Bob Sullivan talks to Alex Witt on MSNBC-TV about the problem of text message spam. Click to watch.

There's something else you might consider to prevent future cell phone spam: If you aren't the type to type into a mobile handset, perhaps you'd prefer turning off your text message service. That would be the ultimate spam filter, and certainly a logical solution to the problem.

Not so fast. Some carriers say they can't disable text messaging.

Shelly Ng of Illinois, who says she was recently hit by text spam, was shocked when her seemingly simple request was rejected by a T-Mobile customer service representative.

"I asked them to turn off my texting capability because I don't text. They refused, claiming that their technology does not allow them to do so," Ng said.

Even worse, the agent then tried to sell her on a text message plan for $4.95 per month. "I got so mad," she said.

Ultimately, T-Mobile gave her 15 free messages as a credit toward future spam. But the basic problem remains: Ultimately, Ng will again be charged 15 cents apiece for messages she doesn't want.

David Henderson, a T-Mobile spokesman, confirmed that T-Mobile users cannot turn off texting for technical reasons.

"The text messaging feature on your account is actually a mandatory feature and cannot be removed,” he said. “This feature is needed because it’s where voice mail and billing notifications are delivered."

Henderson said the problem of text spam is minimal because T-Mobile uses sophisticated spam software and allows consumers to add their own text filters on T-Mobile's Web site. The recent Fredericks spam, for example, didn't reach T-Mobile customers, he said.

Other carrier policies
Verizon customers can't turn off texting either, but spokesman Jeff Nelson said they can do the next best thing: They can shut off text messages sent from e-mail or Web browsers. After that’s done, only cell-phone-to-cell-phone texting is possible, and it's nearly impossible to run a spam campaign because spammers need automated tools and e-mail programs to send thousands of messages at a time, he said.

Still, the company is considering going the extra step and letting customers shut off texting altogether, he said.

"We are looking at that possibility," Nelson said.

Verizon users can call customer service or visit any store for instructions on how to cut off certain kinds of text messages.

Sprint's policy is simpler: Users can call customer service and turn off texting, said spokeswoman Emmy Anderson. They also can use the company's Web site to restrict text messages from individual numbers, though that would do little to prevent spam.

Susan Bean at AT&T (formerly Cingular) said its customers can also shut off texting, but the company doesn't recommend it.

"If you have a customer that really doesn't text, that would be a solution," she said. "But most people don't want to turn off text messaging ... so we have a lot better alternatives for preventing spam." Similar to other providers, she said AT&T employs filters that block unwanted text messages.

RED TAPE WRESTLING TIPS
So far, cell phone text spam is relatively rare, so this is more of a nuisance than a crisis. Still, no one wants to call customer service every time a spam text appears to ask for a 15 cent refund or a one-message credit. So here's what to do:
• Turn off texting if you never use it and your carrier offers that option. By default, almost all phones are text-enabled now.
• If you might eventually want to use text messaging, get on the cheapest plan possible. Many carriers offer a few hundred messages for $2 to $3. I hate to recommend adding a service you might not use all the time, but predictable bills are better than surprises. Even $5 a month is better than one unexpected $45 bill that shows up after teenager suddenly discovers “how 2 txt.”
• Call and complain when you get text spam. It's the only way to motivate your carrier to stay on top of the problem.

Hey, thanks for the story. I'm going to call Verizon and ask them to disable internet texting. It will be a little inconvenient as I often email myself pictures I take with my phone, but that inconvenience is a whole lot better than SPAM texts. I guess I'll just have to carry my camera around with me like I used to do before I got a picture phone.

Yeah, you are because you received it. And turning your phone off won't work either because as soon as you turn it on, the text comes through just like voice mail.

If you haven't gotten down to Coulter pumpkin farm in Westville yet, make the trip... Its well worth it. They have pony rides, a mini-corn maze, and other activities for the really little ones, plus a full size corn maze for adults. There is also plenty of fresh produce, such as tomatoes and the like to be had. They also have a lot of Garwood products such as apples and cider. Then of course they have pumpkins and gourds of all shapes and sizes, at very good prices. The trip can be made very cheap with kids, as there is no admissions charge and plenty to do for free.

Posted by: Ang Oct 15 2007, 04:39 PM

That corn maze is pretty cool. We went a couple years ago and got lost in the maze. My kids were scared to death. We took a hay ride to get to the maze. We were the last tour of the day, plus it was overcast. The kids were afraid we'd still be there after dark and the scarecrows would come get us. They had hot apple cider for after the maze. It was a really neat experience. So, if you have kids between 4 and 14 they would really dig and I recommend it.

The sad thing is if you eliminate shopping and eating, there really isn't much to do indoors around here. St Joe has the Curious Kids Museum, that would be right about the perfect age bracket, but that is about a 45 minute drive.

Chicago has some options, and you can even take the train, which is still fun at that age.

Dogs shoot man on hunting trip Mon Oct 29, 2:52 PM ET

CHICAGO (AFP) - A pack of hunting dogs shot an Iowa man as he went to retrieve a fallen pheasant, authorities said.

James Harris, 37, was shot in the leg while hunting with some friends on Saturday afternoon.

The group shot a bird which landed on the other side of a fence, the Iowa Department of Natural Resource said in a press release.

"Harris reportedly went to retrieve the bird, placed his gun on the ground and crossed the fence near the muzzle end," the press release said.

"When he crossed the fence, hunting dogs stepped on the gun, which discharged and struck Harris in the left calf at a distance of roughly three feet."

Harris was treated at a regional medical center and later transported by helicopter to an Iowa City hospital

Paxton Reported to be Cutting Dozens of Jobs in LaPorte, Ind.

By E&P Staff

Published: November 08, 2007 6:10 PM ET

NEW YORK Less than two months after acquiring its third Indiana newspaper, Paxton Media Group fired as many as half its staffers, a nearby newspaper reported today.

According to the report, the six-day, afternoon Herald-Argus, in LaPorte - in the county of the same name, where Paxton already owns The News Dispatch, a seven-day, 10,854-circulation morning paper in Michigan City - will lose 30 to 40 employees.

Herald-Argus managers could not be reached immediately to confirm the report.

An unidentified source told the Post Tribune -- the Sun-Times Media Group daily in nearby Lake County -- that Herald-Argus prepress, pressroom and post-press workers were informed yesterday that they will be out of work at the end of the month, when production transfers to Paxton's Herald-Palladium, in St. Joseph, Mich., a larger evening paper (21,324-circulation) with a larger press.

Post-Tribune staff writer Tom Wyatt also reported that four sales assistants, a photographer and wire editor were laid off last week.

The Herald-Argus was acquired for an undisclosed price from Small Newspapers Group on Oct. 1, giving the Paducah, Ky., company 11 newspapers in the state.

Wire editor and 22-year Herald-Argus veteran Julie Kessler received her termination notice by certified mail while on sick leave following surgery. Kessler told the Post-Tribune that her coworkers had been assured their paper's sale would have little effect on production and staffing. She said severance includes 12 weeks' pay.

Kessler also said Paxton was telling Herald-Argus and News-Dispatch editorial staffs to refrain from publicizing details of the cutbacks.

Wyatt quotes Kessler saying, "We print information about other companies [experiencing cutbacks]. However, the decision was made that wouldn't happen this time."

Marshals subdue robbery suspect

CHEYENNE -- An escaped convict from Indiana charged with robbing a bank in northeast Wyoming this summer tried to take a nurse hostage at the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center on Sunday before being subdued by police, the U.S. Marshals Service said Tuesday.

Kelvin Jerome Fuller is charged with robbing the Pinnacle Bank in Moorcroft this August. Police say they found money in his car still in wrappers from the bank when he was later arrested Aug. 8 in Montana. He had been on the run since escaping from an Indiana prison on Aug. 1.

According to a release from the Marshals Service in Cheyenne, Fuller is being held at the Platte County Jail. Deputy marshals took him to the medical center in Cheyenne for treatment of "alleged seizures" on Sunday night, the release states.

"Fuller was about to be released from the hospital and was going over his discharge papers with his nurse when he suddenly produced a homemade knife and attempted to hold the nurse hostage," the release states. It said the deputies used a Taser to subdue Fuller when he went for a deputy's weapon.

According to the release, the nurse was treated at the medical center's emergency room and released. Authorities are investigating how Fuller got the piece of metal that they say he fashioned into a knife.

Daniel G. Blythe, assistant federal defender, represents Fuller in the bank robbery case. Blythe said Tuesday he had no comment on the hospital allegations.

WCF Escapee Tried To Take Hostage
Authorities claim Fuller faked seizures, threatened nurse with a shank.

The Associated Press and Staff Reports

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - A man who escaped from the Westville Correctional Facility and was being held in Wyoming tried to take a nurse hostage at a hospital but was subdued by police, authorities reported.

Deputy U.S. marshals took Kelvin J. Fuller to a hospital in Cheyenne for treatment of "alleged seizures" on Sunday night, according to a news release from the U.S. Marshal's Service.

"Fuller was about to be released from the hospital and was going over his discharge papers with his nurse when he suddenly produced a homemade knife and attempted to hold the nurse hostage," the release states.

It said that deputy U.S. marshals used a Taser to subdue Fuller when he went for a deputy's weapon.

The nurse was treated at the medical center's emergency room and released, the release said. Authorities are investigating how Fuller got the piece of metal that they say he fashioned into a knife.

Fuller was being held at the Platte County Jail after he was charged with robbing the Pinnacle Bank in Moorcroft, Wyo., in August.

He had been on the run since escaping from the Westville facility on Aug. 1.

Daniel G. Blythe, assistant federal defender, represents Fuller in the bank robbery case. Blythe has filed notice that Fuller may assert an insanity defense.

Blythe said Tuesday he had no comment on the hospital allegations.

Westville officials said Fuller escaped by kicking through the wall of a building at the facility and climbing over a perimeter fence. He allegedly stole a car from a Westville woman and drove it to the Merrillville area, where investigators say he assaulted a bus driver who had just dropped children off at Deep River Water Park.

Days later - after allegedly robbing a bank in Fishers, Ind., near Indianapolis - Fuller was arrested in Butte, Mont. His arrest came just after he was profiled on the television program, "America's Most Wanted."

Fuller was convicted in Hancock, Marion and Madison counties in Indiana for crimes including multiple counts of robbery and battery, criminal confinement, burglary, arson and escape.

He was first sent to the Department of Correction on Jan. 3, 1992, and his current projected release date was March 2, 2012.

Anyway, he has got his GED, Serve-safe Certification (which is a food service thing to properly prepare and handle food) and completed his culinary training. He's coming home tonite! I've got to pick him up at the bus station at 3:30 am (UGH!). Since he completed his training, he will get a $1200 bonus, which he plans to use to buy a beater car to get around town. With the Serve-safe Cert. and culinary training completion, he'll be able to get a job at a restaurant in the kitchen. He'll probably have to start out as a prep-cook but, as he said, it's a foot in the door.

Thank you all. He's so happy to be home. We haven't had much of a chance to talk as I had to go back to bed as soon as we got home (I was still and hour and half late this morning sad.gif -but I cleared it with my boss yesterday). I'm off the Friday after Thanksgiving, so I'm going to take the boy around town to apply for restaurant jobs. We're also going to sit down and I will teach him how to prepare a resume and balance a check book. Oh, the joys of parenting. I wouldn't trade it for anything and am really excited at the prospect of teaching him to be an adult.

Guess who's making dinner tonite?

I saw this on Snopes.com. Go to www.freerice.com and if you guess the correct definition for the given word, the place will donate rice to hungry nations. For each word you get correct, they donate 10 grains of rice. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but it adds up. I just donated 400 grains.
If you want to read about it, it is in the What's New section on Snopes.
Rice donations aside, it is fun to play the word game and see how well your vocabulary is.

Is your son cooking for Thanksgiving? Being a bit of an amateur cook, I would like to know what he is doing.

((yutz))

Posted by: Ang Nov 20 2007, 12:15 PM

Yes he is, although he doesn't know it yet. wink.gif Tomorrow I plan to do the food shopping and let him prepare the menu. I do know that we're only going to get a turkey breast, but the rest of the food is going to be up to him. We "celebrated" Thanksgiving last Sunday with the whole family since my sis and her fam are going to Loveland, CO to visit her in-laws and my Dad has to work on Thanksgiving. So, it will just be me, my kids and my mom Thursday. I was thinking of going to Montana for the long weekend, but then scored a painting job for Saturday so no trip out of town for me. I'd rather stay here and make a little extra cash.

I'll have him put together a menu tonite and let you know tomorrow what he's planning.

Okay, he's going to season the turkey breast and bake it in a terra-cotta simmer pot that I have. He is going to make mashed potatos-seasoned with garlic and onion, a vegetable medley (all fresh-cut veggies-no frozen or canned), cranberry fruit salad, some side dish made with pasta and tomato juice, and a cherry pie for dessert.
Yum, yum, yum. My belly is growling just thinking about this delicious meal that I don't have to cook!

What a great Thanksgiving... how about them COWBOYS!

When are the sports fans here going to start ranting about the Big Ten Network and the NFL Network?

No Dallas-Green Bay game and not nearly enough IU basketball.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Nov 28 2007, 07:27 AM

Its a greed contest between millionaires and billionaires. Its depressing more than anything, but it is the trend. I got to live the Sportsvision experience 20 years ago with the White Sox going to cable, while the Cubs thrived on regular TV. People forget that the Sox actually were the more popular team in Chicago during long stretches of time. The Cable versus WGN divergence was the biggest difference in their current bases. The Cubs were on TV every single day, while you had to pay to see the Sox, in a time when the cable saturation rates were under 50%. It made a difference.

The NFL network is really stupid for the same reason. One of the reasons the NFL is so successful is that there are games on the same days and the same nights every week, and they are always on TV, and easy to find. If they are going to start moving their premier products away from the general viewing audiences they are going to lose the casual fan, much like the White Sox did during the late 1980's.

If you want another case study in TV, look no further than the mess that is the Chicago Blackhawks, and their home blackout history. It will take them years to recover from that mess.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Nov 28 2007, 09:35 AM

It has already happened. Look at Monday Night Football: Sunday Night Football is the new MNF because of the big, accessible audience. The NFL is already fractionating (great word, huh?) their audience by adding the Thursday and Saturday games. For a cautionary example, the NFL needs to study the rise and fall of the NHL and NBA.

((loquacious))

Posted by: southsider2k7 Nov 28 2007, 10:19 AM

The NHL is a really good example too. Between canceling the Stanley Cup to a strike, and putting their games on a no-name network that no one has on their cable system, they have been the poster child for how to make a nation forget about their sport.

Posted by: Ang Nov 28 2007, 11:00 AM

NHL. What's that? laugh.gif

((sexy))

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Nov 28 2007, 12:31 PM

The Big Ten is slicing its own throat by going closed-network. It is hard enough to follow IU, and now it is going to be extra-hard.

Posted by: JHeath Nov 28 2007, 12:44 PM

Why can't they just air the games on the more widely available networks like they used in the "good old days"? laugh.gif

((comatose))

It's ALWAYS windy where I live. Wind is just part of the winter weather. My first winter took some getting used to because a storm doesn't follow the wind here. Typically, November through February, we have 30-40 mph sustained wind with 50-70 mph gusts. Some days are worse, some are better, but it's always windy.

Well there is good news, and not-so-good news for us.

First off is the good news.

Alexis Christine Gresham, the latest addition to our family was born 12-27 at 12:27 am. She was 7 pounds even, and 19 inches even. She even came in with a head full of hair.

The not-so-good news is that she has had a couple of issues that worried the staff at St Anthony's so they wanted to send her to a facility that actually had a neo-natal intensive care unit, who specialized more in patients her size. They sent her over too Valpo/Porter Memorial Hospital where she has been the last couple of days. The great staff at our hospital caught her quit breathing twice in her first morning, which isn't all that uncommon. For those that don't know, babies come into this world a totally clean slate. They have no idea how to do things that we take for granted, like breathing, regulating temperature, eating etc. Well she stopped breathing a couple of times, and also seemed to have some circulation problems, as one of her arms turned a little blue. The doctors and staff at Porter-Memorial have been great as well. They have done a bunch of tests to rule out what could be wrong, and so far all the tests have come back with good news. It sounds like even if it is a worst case scenario, it will be something that the baby grows out of, so long term it won't affect her a bit.

It has been stressful commuting between MC and Valpo, and deciding how to split time between our two young children. Madison, our oldest, just turned two in November, and while extremely smart and perseptive, probably isn't ready to see her baby sister hooked up to IVs and wires, so she has stayed at home, while being watched by aunts and grandparents. I am staying home today with her, while mom goes up to be with the new baby.

Wish us luck, and think of us if you can. Hopefully little Alexis will be getting full clearance to go home soon, and this will all be done.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jan 1 2008, 12:35 PM

How was her L/S ratio? Heart chambers ok? I will pray for your family with hopes that all is well. Beautiful name, too.

Hopefully everyone's basements are OK.

I heard on GMA this morning that currently, Indiana is the worst it's been in YEARS for flooding. Like breaking records all over the place. The Tippecanoe over-flowed its banks and some guy drowned. But, from Kentucky to Michigan, Indiana has record flooding all over the place. I was going to ask you guys about that this morning.
