City takes 3rd, LaPorte finishes 5th

LAPORTE -- While the invitational went well for one area boys swimming team, the other area team just wanted to fill numerous holes and do the best it could.

Michigan City did respectable and finished in third place (140) in the five-team LaPorte Invitational, while the short-handed host Slicers registered fifth (87) in the LaPorte Natatorium on Saturday morning.

No. 2 Chesterton won the invite (220), while Crown Point posted second (178).

Despite missing seniors Brian Vedo, Brian Nagel and Stu Blowers, who were all out with sickness, the Wolves competed against a potent field that they will have to contend with in the sectional.

The Michigan City diving trio of sophomore Nick Stone, junior Will Swedenburg and sophomore Justin Kramer led the way, earning second in the 3-meter diving competition (216.3). Crown Point tallied first in diving (261.1).

The Wolves’ 200-yard backstroke relay team of sophomore Jason Barnes, freshman Austin Cogdill, senior Jared Wahlquist and senior Aaron Trunk registered third (2:18.79) for one of their best showings of the day.

“This was an interesting meet,” Michigan City coach Dan Jenkins said. “I saw a number of things. I’m going to have to look at a couple lineup changes. A couple nice surprises from some of our newer guys gives me a little direction for them for the future. Like Jason Barnes showing a really nice 50-yard backstroke today. Didn’t really know he could do a backstroke, so this has been pretty good for me.”

The Wolves’ 200-yard freestyle relay quartet of junior Mike Wisthoff, Swedenburg, Barnes and junior Matt Frye notched third (1:50.74).

The Slicers were the only other team besides the Trojans to earn first place in an event. The 200-yard butterfly relay team of sophomore Craig Levenhagen, senior Mark Gielczyk, junior Chris Kermin and sophomore Ryan Letts placed first (1:48.60).

“The first thing that stands out is we were the only ones to win an event other than Chesterton, so that’s kind of nice,” LaPorte coach Bart Frank said. “I think Chesterton won everything except the one relay we won. That’s our shining moment I guess for the meet, it was kind of nice to do that.”

Letts had LaPorte’s fastest time in that event, swimming the last leg in 25.76. Kermin posted 27.01, while Gielczyk and Levenhagen recorded 27.33 and 28.50, respectively.

The Slicers were missing a total of six swimmers and divers, including having no one compete in diving. Sophomore diver Codie Bishop has a sprained ankle and junior Jeremy Burgess was sick.

“I had to leave some empty spots, which hurt,” Frank said. “No divers again, that hurt team-wise.

“But we had some good swims. It was nice to be able to put some different kids together and get some different looks, so overall it went well for us.”

LaPorte’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Letts, senior Chris Clark, Levenhagen and Kermin finished third (1:37.78) but they were just five seconds off Chesterton’s winning pace.

For Michigan City, the 200-yard breaststroke relay team of Cogdill, Stone, Wahlquist, and Trunk recorded fourth (2:44.27) with Trunk swimming a 37.45 split.

“Aaron Trunk really impressed me on his breaststroke,” Jenkins said. “He really worked on that 4 X 50 breaststroke. I’m going to have to look at his split time on him there.”

The 400-yard butterfly relay quartet of junior Nick Pabon, Trunk, freshman Kyle Plummer and junior Kyle Dierdorf placed third (4:42.22), too.

“This was a good day,” Jenkins said.

“Some of the times that I saw in a few people that don’t normally do certain events we’re going to find very helpful for future meet planning here.”
