they are putting on? Talk about self-promotion to the nth degree....

Check out the front page on their site today. You'd see that size of headline and think Abe Lincoln was raised from the dead and then shot again, dead, in Michigan City.

Michigan City lands national cooking event

News-Dispatch, Blue Chip to host a Taste of Home cooking expo

Move over Rachel Ray, Gordon Ramsay and Paula Deen — make room for Michigan City hosting a national cooking event.

The No. 1 selling magazine in the world, Taste of Home, is holding a cooking demonstration event in Michigan City.

The News-Dispatch and Blue Chip Casino Hotel Spa will be hosting the event on Tuesday, May 25, at the casino’s Stardust Event Center.

Doors will open to the public at 3 p.m. to view exhibitors and to claim your seat.

The cooking show will begin at 6:30 p.m.

And there's a big mistake in the story. It claims "Taste of Home" is the Number one selling magazine in the world. I thought that was weird, since I'd never heard of it, but my Aunt Elle has never heard of Game Informer. So, I did some checking. Like, for facts.

According to magazinecost.com, as of 2009, Taste of Home was Number 12 in terms of best selling magazines. Maybe "cooking" magazine, but it is well behind Number 2 Better Homes & Gardens, Number 4 Good Housekeeping, Number 5 Women's Day, Number 6 Ladies Home Journal and Number 7 Family Circle -- all of which cover cooking. But hell, what's truth when you're promoting yourself?

P.S., Game Informer is Number 9. It rocks!

Please forgive my quibbling, but it looks like the list from magazinecost.com isn't accurate. I wonder if they're referring to the magazines that sell best on their website, rather than overall.

Ulrich's Periodicals Directory 2010 shows Taste of Home as having a circulation of 3,100,000. Game Informer has 200,000. It doesn't include rankings of magazines by circulation, so I can't check whether it's actually number one. But I checked a few other popular magazines (Time, People, Businessweek, Better Homes & Gardens) and their circulation figures were all well below those of Taste of Home.

It was a big headline, though. Must have been a slow news day.
