First-year Michigan City boys basketball coach John Boyd said on Wednesday that three former players who had competed for him while he coach at West Side officially have been cleared by the IHSAA to play after transferring to Michigan City.

The three new Wolves players are sophomore guard Taylor Lavery, and junior guards Reggie Clay and Alajuwon Edwards, who all suited up for the Cougars last season.

"They're good to go," Boyd said. "They've all moved into our school district."

IHSAA commissioner Blake Ress told The Times that from the information he had obtained, the three student-athletes and their families had moved to Michigan City. Ress added that West Side personnel did not contest the transfer.

Ress did say it was "strange" that the three players had followed Boyd to Michigan City.

"It seems strange when a coach changes schools and three of the athletes change schools. I'd say that's not normal," Ress said. "But normally if the schools agree (to the transfer), we normally don't take real issue with it."

Last season, Lavery lived in Lake Central's district but he enrolled at West Side, becoming the first white player to compete for the Cougars, even though the Gary address he gave West Side administrators did not exist.

Boyd said he is trying to get his program ready for a tough DAC schedule, which begins Friday at Portage.

"We're trying to get better," Boyd said. "We're working hard every day in practice to meet the challenge."

Edwards and Clay are junior guards, while Lavery is a sophomore guard.
