It will be interesting to see how many of these boys stay down next year and play again at the JPW level as older/lighter's......if they are 11 years old, they can't weigh more than 85 lbs. I think a few of these kids will qualify.

POST-TRIBUNE STAFF REPORT

The Portage Pop Warner cheer program just kept getting better all season long, and it culminated in what is thought to be the best finish by a Northwest Indiana cheer squad at nationals at Walt Disney World in Florida.

Portage's junior midgets earned first in the state and regional competitions, then finished third in the junior midget small intermediate division at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., last week.

The Indians posted a score of 65.66, which was less than a point behind second-place East Brunswick (N.J.). Medford (Ore.) won with 70.02 points.

But Portage wasn't the only region squad to finish third in its division.

The Tri-Town Raiderettes matched Portage's effort in the pee-wee dance division with a score of 67.76. They finished behind Cape Youth (Fla.) and San Francisco. Tri-Town also saw its junior midget cheer squad finish seventh in the small novice division.

Other area programs that made the expensive trip to Florida and placed in their divisions included Hobart (ninth in junior pee-wee large novice, ninth in pee-wee large novice and 10th in junior midget large novice), LaPorte (10th in junior pee-wee large novice and 12th in pee-wee small intermediate), Kankakee Valley (11th in junior pee-wee small intermediate), Southlake (eighth in pee-wee small novice and 12th in junior midget small novice), Michigan City (sixth in pee-wee small intermediate), Merrillville (13th in pee-wee small novice) and Highland (13th in pee-wee small intermediate).
