2017's biggest news stories of the year in Michigan City according to CitybytheLake.org.

10. Michigan City High School wins national Advanced Placement testing recognition for their AP testing program. Only 19 schools in the entire state of Indiana were honored as such.

9. Nearly 5 years after the Miracle on Mount Baldy, the National Lakeshore area surrounding Mt Baldy was reopened, while the actual sand dune itself remains closed to the general public.

8. After an emergency call at Saint Anthony's hospital two off duty police officers ended up shooting an uncooperative patient who was accused of brandishing a weapon at the officers.

7. Long time Michigan City advocate Al Whitlow passed away late in the 2017 leaving his At Large seat on the Council open. Chris Schwanke found himself in controversy late in the year over statements made on social media, and resigned his seat leading the 6th ward, though he had already moved out of state at the time and had planned on resigning previous to the controversy.

6. Reuters following up on the lead controversy in Flint Michigan did studies all over the United States to test lead levels in children, and found levels over twice as high in the northern and western parts of Michigan City. The highest concentrations found high lead levels in nearly 20% of our kids.

5. 6 year old Delaney Klewer was hit by a car and tragically died shortly after. The driver fled, but after some investigative work, a description of the vehicle involved was reported. Almost a couple of weeks later Marcus Scully surrendered to the police and was charged in the incident for fleeing the scene.

4. Governor Eric Holcomb continued a recent tradition of sitting governors visiting Michigan City as he made an official visit in which he road the South Shore train in Michigan City as well as learned about the double tracking project that is going in front of Congress soon.

3. Michigan City High School's football team has a record breaking season as they get to the final four for the first time of any school in the history of all City's high school football teams covering Elston, Rogers, and MCHS.

2. Charles Gerron is charged with the murder of Ne'Keisha Hodges Hawkins after nearly 5 years elapsing. Hawkins father Kalvon Hawkins had even taken to social media in an effort to push the over 100 witnesses who saw the shooting happen at a party in 2012. The case was marred by nearly having Gerron take a much smaller plea deal which was met with outrage in the community and forced a trial to happen which ended in the conviction of Gerron, and a 50 year sentence.

1. A "Baby Box" installed at the Coolspring Volunteer Fire Department, and only one of two in the US, was utilized by an unnamed mother who placed a baby approximately one hour old into the box in November, marking the first time a baby has ever been given up in the matter. Baby Hope as she was nicknamed received the ultimate gift and was adopted late in the year.

The La Lumiere Lakers won the National Championship in New York City in Boys High School Basketball in 2017. I would think this might at least make the top ten. Hmmmmm.

Why?

Nevermind, it is not worth explaining when the event that MCHS "makes it" to the "State" final four is one of the top ten. BTW, I like Diggler's event that N-D screwed its readers with their price hike. I will be unsubscribing when my current subscription runs out. It isn't worth what I am currently paying.
