For anyone who wants to share, I figured this would be a great place to talk about TV...

Today's obvious topic is the ending of the Sopranos... Love it or hate it?

Posted by: JHeath Jun 12 2007, 02:34 PM

I didn't catch the ending, but the people running this site think Tony is ba-da-bing...gone.

No cable; won't miss what I have never seen!

Posted by: Ang Jun 13 2007, 10:08 AM

I, for one, am so looking foward to the new season of Nip/Tuck, only I think they're going to call it McNamara/Troy-Hollywood. The bad thing is that it doesn't come on here until 11 p.m. Thank goodness for DVR's. I love whoever invented those things!

How about LOST! Anyone else a fan?

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jun 14 2007, 09:51 AM

I wasn't able to watch that because when it first came out it was on the same time as 24, and I'm going to marry Kiefer Sutherland someday wink.gif I have the DVR now, but the show has been on so long that I wouldn't know what's going on. I would like to get it on DVD because I think I would like it.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jun 14 2007, 12:20 PM

Rent the first couple seasons on DVD, you will fall in love with it. It is the most addicting show on television today.

We can. I figured I would try this out as a big thread, and if there was more interest in specifc shows, we could separate them out for their own threads. To be honest, I didn't know if there was enough interest for anything more than a general thread.

There was an article today on MSNBC that this theory is gaining "acceptance" whatever that means.

Posted by: RedDevilMC Sep 27 2007, 10:40 AM

I am a fan of LOST. I can't wait until the new season. Jack made the wrong decision. I watched the season premier of Bionic Women. I use to be a comic book fanatic, so I love anything super hero like or sci-fi.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Sep 27 2007, 02:21 PM

I can't wait for LOST! to start again. I watch baseball for most of the year, so now that it is ending, its a god-send that my other favorite shows are back on.

Is Lost starting soon or is going to be like 24 and not start until after the New Year? I love the show, but I have to admit that the last season finale was a letdown.

Our DVR is set on Survivor, CSI (Las Vegas), the Office, 24 and Lost.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Sep 28 2007, 06:20 AM

Lost starts again in Feb08 mad.gif, and runs 16 straight weeks until May.

Anyone else watching the new ABC show Pushing Daisies? I really like this show so far. It is a peculiar show, with a sort of Dr Suess cast of characters and narration. It is definately different from anything else I have seen on TV. If are bored with most TV, check it out.

Posted by: JHeath Oct 18 2007, 11:56 AM

I don't watch too much TV, but this show does look interesting...from what I've seen on the commercials.

When does it air?

Posted by: southsider2k7 Oct 18 2007, 11:57 AM

Wed nites on ABC at 7pm.

Its the one new show that really got my attention. The rest of them seem to be more of the same.

Ooops. That might leave me out. Ghost Hunters comes on then. I'll check my listing for Wed and if it comes on at 6 or 8 I might get to watch it. Our programming here is a little funny. Because of the time difference we sometimes have programming based on Eastern time, sometimes Pacific time, and sometimes it's two hours after Eastern time. So, if it says 7 for eastern time, it will be on at 7 here, which would be 9 Eastern time. I LIVE for the preview guide!

I am hooked on The Shield.

Posted by: RedDevilMC Oct 22 2007, 01:43 PM

Me too but we changed our package and couldn't get it. They now show the 2006 season on WGN, so I'm playing catch up.

I like the new Bionic Women. I use to watch the Bionic Woman and Man as a kid. I'm hooked on all of the super hero stuff.

Has the new season started?!?! Gosh, I surely hope not cause I love that show too. I've been watching it faithfully since the first episode. It doesn't come on here until 11:00 pm so I have it set to record on the trusty DVR.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Oct 24 2007, 11:05 AM

As you may surmise, I do not have cable tv, so I catch the reruns on WGN. I think they just played episode 4 of the 2006 season. No spoilers, please.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Oct 26 2007, 07:05 AM

"The Office" is way better in a half hour format versus the whole hour episodes they have been doing. Plus its really nice to see "Scrubs" back on the air.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Oct 26 2007, 07:58 AM

Haven't seen either.

Posted by: Ang Oct 26 2007, 09:09 AM

I watched about 5 minutes of The Office and my eyes and ears started bleeding. Had to change the channel quick!
Scrubs is okay, but slightly overrated IMO.

I've been watching Two and a half Men and that show cracks me up. I'm not a big fan of Charlie Sheen (I met him in person in Spain when he was filming that Navy Seal movie and didn't like him). But that show is hilarious! OMG, I laugh so hard sometimes.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Oct 29 2007, 08:35 AM

The problem with many, many shows is that the jokes are very predictable. I don't know about you, but we were funnier in jr hi than most shows are.

Posted by: Dave Nov 22 2007, 02:44 AM

I've been watching Pushing Daisies as well. I'm not sure if I like it yet.

You can see it online at

I've also been watching the NBC series Chuck and Bionic Woman (both online as well. Who needs a TV?)

I have caught Chuck a few times, and I have to say the show is going on me.

I think I am. I hear the plan is for 48 more episodes, but only 8 of them are in the can due to the writer's strike.

I speed watched all three seasons, and I'm wondering how they are going to explain some of the stuff on the island, short of "It's magic!" or "It's all a dream!"

Well, the DVR is ready for tonight.

They have to have something in mind. After the uproar with the way the Soprano's ended, they have got to be smarter than that.

Last nights episode didn't disappoint.

Posted by: RedDevilMC Feb 1 2008, 09:27 AM

I am so HAPPY it's back on the air.

OMG!!!!!!!!! I AM HOOKED!

The last episode last night was Mr. Locke's story. I found myself crying at the end of it. That is simply amazing that after the crash he could walk again and fulfill his dreams.

I have a gazillion questions, but I'm not going to ask. I'm going to wait like everyone else who watched it as it aired first had to do.

Rest assured, though, that every Monday I will be found in front of my t.v. catching up on Lost!

Sheesh!! I am so lost. ha ha

I borrowed a tv I know has a digital tuner and tried the stations I watch--and it was no different than the reception and channels I get now. On one station, Ch. 23, they have been advertising 23.1 through 23.4, all with different programming. However, this did not come in in any descernible way. Later, I think I heard them say on another ad that if you have a digital tuner or the box, you have to do the channel pickup sequence for that tv set. Well, by that time the borrowed digital tv was back to its owner.

Do you know anyone or does anyone out there have one of the boxes? Am I gonna be the only one in MC with one? Oh, most of the tvs chez moi are old, very old, and will not work with the box in any case. I plan to use them as monitors for the betamax.

I do not have a box, I have comcast. I have no idea how the receivers actually work, sorry!

I have been told that all of these receivers are different in that one receiver may pick up channels that another will not. My parents chose to purchase a new TV that is HD ready instead of the "box" because of the afore mentioned problem.

I am in the process of selecting an external digital TV receiver for the only TV in our house. Yep, you read right, with 4 kids, the wife and I decided a long time ago that a single television would suit our families TV requirements. That's one TV for all our electronics all together, we don't have TV's for the Nintendo, VCR, etc. We have just ONE TV in our house, period. I should mention we have 5 computers and 2 Windows Servers, some are capable of streaming web content.

The good 'Ole receiver you can purchase for cash or acquire through the government coupon program at Wal-Mart will work just fine. However, depending on the location of the TV in your house, and your proximity to the TV station you are trying to watch, a TV antenna will probably be in your future.

I stopped at the locally owned Tri Electronics a few weeks back and spoke with one of the salesmen regarding this issue and which antenna would best suit my needs. I prefer Tri Electronic over Radio Shack. Based on my situation they recommended a spaceship looking amplified antenna be mounted on the same mast as my wireless Internet antenna on the room of my house.

The salesman at Tri welcomed me to take the antenna home on a clear day once I purchased the converter box and ran the necessary cable to test the signal. If I was not satisfied I could return the antenna, given it was still in new condition, and choose another. I love dealing with locally owned companies, the customer service is far superior than anything you will ever receive from a big box retailer.

As of last week Wal-Mart was out of the digital converter boxes. I have also heard ramblings that the FCC may push the date for the conversion which is currently February 17, 2009.

I requested my digital converter coupons in the mail today. Will update the thread when they are received in the mail.

Additional information, including how to obtain a TV converter box coupon is available at http://www.dtv.gov/.

Good luck!

On important thing to note. With Digital TV the signal is either good enough for the converter box to receive or not. The days of tweaking the antenna for a better signal are gone. It is binary.

The Fed government is actually out of coupons for the converter boxes. They have established a waiting list, and is sending them out as older coupons expire unused.

I have also heard that Obama is making rumblings about pushing the all HD date back a bit.

Thanks for the heads up SSER. I may have to purchase the box. Nothing about pushing the date on any government website though.

Yep, confirmed, Pushing Daisies is canceled. It was growing on me. ABC even has three episodes in the can they haven't scheduled, though they are saying they may run them in February.

Gotta go set the DVR for Lost!

We purchased a digital TV several months ago when the analog TV finally gave up. We also purchased an antenna but found that an old extension cord mounted in our attic worked better than said "digital TV antenna". We continued to use the amplifier from the antenna.

We get all the Chicago stations except Channel 2 (CBS). We can pick up the analog signal but it is snowy. I've heard that Channel 2 may relocate their antenna so maybe that channel will improve.

We are not big TV consumers, but now we have about 40 channels OTA, can't beat that price!

I'm just hoping they renew Chuck. NBC has not said they are going to, and with Jay Leno using up 5 hours of prime time soon it seems like they are going to be trimming shows.

Anyone else have thoughts on primetime Leno? I suppose it would save NBC some money doing one comparatively low budget show as opposed to five higher budget shows, but I don't think the transition to prime time for Leno is going to go well.

Chuck's a good show, but it's tough to be a big fan of any NBC show since their disastrous series endings of Las Vegas and 4400 (via USA). They don't show a lot of respect for their series, and I hate to get involved in a show and have it canceled with open story lines and cliffhangers.

I watched the first four episodes of http://www.cbs.com/primetime/harpers_island/ this week. I'm really liking it! It's a horror show/murder mystery with a setup like And Then There Were None. A bunch of people are on an island for a wedding, and there's an unknown murderer on the loose. Violence + some nudity + some bad language makes it not kid-friendly, but I dig a good mystery.

Farewell to Our Favorite (and Not-So-Favorite) TV Series
By Yahoo! TV Staff | Friday, May 22, 2009, 8:48 AM

It's so hard to say goodbye to "Samantha" and "Earl."
They say breaking up is hard to do, but it's not always hard -- it really depends on the breakup. There are the easy, necessary and long overdue breakups along with the sad, painful, and shocking ones. When we learned of the more than three dozen TV shows ending this season, we started to realize (being the crazy TV fans that we are) that those same breakup categories can apply to the farewells we bid to our favorite (and not-so-favorite) TV series. (Although there's a much smaller chance of drunk dialing an old favorite sitcom.)

First, there are the cancellations that caught us by surprise; the shows we really wish wouldn't leave us. Samantha? Earl? (as in "…Who?" and "My Name Is…") We thought things were going so well! You were so charming and captivating and we truly enjoyed spending time with you. But, alas, you're going and there's nothing we can do to make you stay. Sigh.

Next, there are the series we once had exciting relationships with, but as time went on things got a little dull. In the case of dramas like "ER" and "Prison Break," by the end we barely recognized the shows we fell in love with years ago. We saw these breakups coming and we know ending it is for the best, but we'll always have the good old days.

And finally, there's the last, and least painful, category. The shows we barely got to know. They looked good on paper so we tried starting something up with series like "In the Motherhood" and "Kings," but lost interest before the relationships even got off the ground. We won't lose any sleep over these barely-got-to-know-ya shows, that's for sure. See-ya!

Check out a few of the notable cancellations in each category and say your own proper goodbyes:

----------

THE HEARTBREAKERS:

"My Name is Earl" (NBC)

Though never dubbed Must-See TV, "My Name is Earl," which followed a petty crook on the road to redemption, had a strong following and actually delivered its fair share of laughs. Over the course of four seasons, Earl (played to perfection by man-boy extraordinaire, Jason Lee) mixed and mingled with some of the weirdest and wackiest characters to ever grace the small screen, including one of TV's funniest females, 2006 Best Supporting Actress winner Jamie Pressly, who portrayed Joy Farrah Darville-Hickey-Turner, a trailer trash she-devil with a heart of coal. But, after 96 episodes and innumerable El Camino, DNA test, and STD jokes, NBC decided to dump the show in favor of hanging onto Amy Poehler's questionable new program, "Parks and Recreation" … which should really be a "Saturday Night Live" sketch, not a sitcom. Excuse the sidebar. In any case, Earl and his trailer park crew have already bid adieu, and there's nothing we can do but to borrow one of Joy's signature phrases, "What the Hell?"

"Samantha Who?" (ABC)

You've got to be kidding me?! How could ABC pull the plug on its best comedy -- a truly hysterical show that starred America's sweetheart, People's Choice Award winner Christina Applegate, Emmy Award winner Jean Smart, the deliciously evil Jennifer Esposito, the heartwarming Melissa McCarthy, and the adorable Barry Watson? Here's how: When the network moved "Samantha Who?" from its comfy Monday night time slot post "Dancing with the Stars" (where it was pulling down nearly 15 million viewers each week) to the dumping ground on Thursday nights at 8:30pm, behind the now-defunct flub "In the Motherhood," the ratings tanked, and they decided to cancel the show. Why not retool it? Why not bring in some special guest stars? Here's an idea: put it back on Monday nights where it flourished! Or, God forbid, promote the show. What is wrong with you, ABC? You want people like Christina Applegate and "Ugly Betty's" America Ferrera to be the friendly faces of your organization, and yet you refuse to market their programs properly. This mismanagement is killing the network, and the hemorrhaging has only just begun. Remember the good ol' days? You know, when ABC was the king of comedy programming? "Roseanne," "Home Improvement," "Coach"? What about the TGIF lineup which at one point featured "Perfect Strangers," "Full House," "Mr. Belvedere," and "Just the Ten of Us"? Huh? Despite a ton of disappointed fans, the awesomely funny show about an amnesiac with a naughty past is a goner. Here's to hoping that another network (CBS, are you listening?) picks up Christina and her crew and gives them the respect and chance they deserve to succeed.

----------

THE ONES THAT RAN THEIR COURSE:

"Boston Legal" (ABC)

Back in 2003, fans of the legal drama "The Practice" were devastated when creator David E. Kelley suddenly fired most of the show's main cast members, including Dylan McDermott and Lara Flynn Boyle, and brought on '80s film star James Spader to head up a new cast. Turns out the move was the beginning of a quirky-but-brilliant new spin-off called "Boston Legal," which eventually boasted a cast of stalwart actors like William Shatner, Candace Bergen and John Larroquette. But after five seasons, plenty of Emmy nods and wins, and wild and wacky cases dealing with everything from homeland security to white supremacist musical acts to paparazzi murders, court finally adjourned for good.

"ER" (NBC)

For the fans who stuck with this medical drama for the full 15 seasons, one thing became pretty clear toward the end of its run: There were a lot less of us watching. The cast looked a lot different on the 331st episode than it did on the first, but the show will still go down in history as the longest-running -- and one of the best -- medical dramas in television history. While it may have run past its prime, "ER" took advantage of knowing which season was its last and treated fans to a trip down memory lane with appearances by favorite former cast members (George Clooney, anyone?) throughout Season 15, injecting enough excitement to bring former viewers back to the "ER" during those last few episodes.

"King of the Hill" (FOX)

Though it never rose to international super-fame quite like fellow FOX animated series "The Simpsons" did, "King of the Hill," which followed propane salesman Hank Hill and his family in a small Texas town, became a bona fide hit and a critical darling soon after it premiered 12 years ago. The series, conceived by "Beavis and Butthead" creator Mike Judge, helped pave the way for FOX's Sunday night lineup of animated comedies which now includes "Family Guy," "American Dad" and the upcoming "Cleveland Show." After a near cancellation during its tenth season, "King of the Hill" has been living on borrowed time the past few years and is finally ready to pack it in after its 13th season comes to a close. Die-hard fans can still find the Hill family in syndication.

"Without a Trace" (CBS)

Riding the coattails of CBS's massively popular Jerry Bruckheimer-produced procedurals, "Without a Trace" captivated viewers with its focus on an FBI missing persons unit headed up by Special Agent Jack Malone, played by Anthony LaPaglia. In addition to following one intense case per episode, the show gave viewers a look at the team members' complicated personal lives and emotional reactions to cases. Though the series managed to crack the Top 20 in the ratings during all seven of its seasons, "Without a Trace" is about to disappear for good.

"Prison Break" (FOX)

When "Prison Break" first burst onto the scene in 2005, the show quickly gained a solid fan base and whipped them into quite a frenzy. The show, about a man who purposely lands himself in jail to help his innocent brother break out, had the edge-of-your-seat excitement of "24" and the you-better-pay-attention mystery of "Lost." Unfortunately, the series began mixing things up a little too much, moving the setting to Central America, and losing its viewer interest along the way. Its new Friday timeslot this year didn't help matters and after four seasons, "Prison Break" will be taking a permanent one.

----------

THE... WHO WERE YOU AGAIN?

"Kings" (NBC)

Created by executive producer Michael Green ("Heroes"), NBC's drama "Kings" retold the timeless tale of David and Goliath. The epic story's young hero inadvertently rose to power amidst war, greed, power, and romance. Instantly, viewers were welcomed to the Kingdom of Gilboa, a modern-day monarchy led by the well entrenched King Silas Benjamin (Ian McShane, "Deadwood"). Gilboa was at war with the neighboring Gath and on the battlefield was where young soldier David Shepherd (Chris Egan) emerged as Gilboa's symbol of bravery. King Silas invited David into the capital city of Shiloh, but soon realized that David may very well take over his throne. After airing four episodes in the Sunday 8pm timeslot, NBC relegated the drama to Saturday nights and allowed it to air its remaining eight episodes. "Kings" is a show that never really had a chance, which is quite a shame because it boasted a strong cast, the concept was unique, and the production quality was breathtaking. Perhaps the idea was too new for viewers who are used to crime and medical procedurals and dramas, because during its four weeks on Sunday nights ratings dipped week after week. And with such low ratings, NBC never really gave this imaginative series a real chance at success.

"Kath & Kim" (NBC)

"Kath & Kim," based on the Australian series of the same name, followed the fortysomething divorcée Kathy Day (played by "SNL" alum Molly Shannon), who thought she was finally about to have some time to herself to search for love. But when her narcissistic daughter, Kim (portrayed by Selma Blair of "Hellboy" fame), separated from her husband, she convinced her mom to let her move into Kath's tacky suburban Florida home. The house rules had changed, however, as Kath refused to cater to her bratty daughter's every whim like the good old days. There were plenty of fake nails, rhinestones, and big hair as these two over-the-top ladies took the suburbs by storm. NBC ended up airing only 17 episodes (just short of a full 22-episode season) of "Kath & Kim" before giving it the boot. Though the Australian version of the show became quite a hit in Australia and both Shannon and Blair were spot-on as the wacky mother-daughter duo, the American adaptation was apparently lost in translation for U.S. audiences as many critics considered it unfunny and practically unwatchable -- something comedies, um, should not be.

"In the Motherhood" (ABC)

Loosely based on the 2007 web series of the same name, "In the Motherhood" -- which chronicled the silliness and scariness of being a mom in the modern world -- starred "Will & Grace" vet Megan Mullally as a liberated single mom with an overly responsible teenage son, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" cutie Cheryl Hines as a divorced working mom of two who hires a male nanny ("SNL" alum Horatio Sanz) to help around the house, and relative newcomer Jessica St. Clair as a painfully sweet stay-at-home supermom. With at least three proven funny folks in the cast (Mullally, Hines, Sanz) and the amusing concept of motherhood, the suburbia-set comedy had huge potential, but the half-hour show was filled with watered-down, obvious jokes that were not very funny at all. After only airing four episodes, ABC pulled the plug, which was probably four episodes too late.

"Sit Down, Shut Up" (FOX)

From the creator behind "Arrested Development," the animated series "Sit Down, Shut Up" followed the lives of eight egocentric, insecure, and wildly immature staffers at a high school in a Northeastern fishing town. Their motto? The children always come second. From the accident-prone principal to the vain English teacher (voiced by Will Arnett) to the ostracized gym teacher (voiced by Jason Bateman) to the very jaded, aging German teacher (voiced by Henry Winkler), one thing was clear: These public servants were wacky, miserable, and totally unfit to mentor children. With the comedic pedigree of "Arrested Development" alums, there were high hopes that "SDSU" would be insanely funny, but the jokes felt forced, the characters lacked depth, and the combination of animated characters with live-action backgrounds was distracting. Even with the strong FOX animated lineup support, "SDSU" only aired four episodes and quickly disappeared. FOX is hoping viewers will forget about the animated mess and look to "Family Guy" spin-off "Cleveland Show" come fall.

For those who are interesting in Life After People on the History Channel, there is a somewhat local focus on an episode. In the second episode of the season they talk about Chicago, and they use the decay of abandoned buildings in Gary to talk about what Chicago would start to look like. There are a few places that I recognized from there.

For your online viewing pleasure, hulu.com has all ten seasons of Stargate SG-1 available.

I didn't watch it when it aired, but I've watched the whole thing online.

I love Netflix! They have instant movies and you can watch t.v. episodes. Ok, so I'm now a fan of "Heros" I think I didn't watch it when it first came out cause it clashed with something else I watched. Durn! I didn't know what I was missing! Does anyone else watch that show? Is it still on the air (I don't have cable). I'm still watching the first season and I am as hooked on that show as I am on Lost (Thx to Ss'der for turning me on to that one!)

Heroes is on the air still -- currently on break for the season, or mid-season, I keep getting those confused.

Ang, how did you feel about the wrap-up of LOST?

Oh, and looking at the previous post, Heroes has since been canceled.

Actually, I haven't seen it yet!!! Can you believe it? So don't tell me anything about it.

I still don't have cable and it's not looking like I'm going to get it any time soon (waaaayyyyy too much money for what you get-which is practically nothing!) and my laptop needs some serious attention by someone who knows what they're doing (certainly not me) so I haven't been able to watch it streaming.

I'm waiting for it to be released on DVD then I'll just buy the whole stinking series. It's crazy, I know.
