INDIANAPOLIS - State Rep. Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City, was named Legislator of the Year by the Indiana Conservation Alliance for his efforts to preserve and protect the Great Lakes.

Pelath received the award Tuesday during the Alliance's fifth annual Conservation Day at the Indiana Statehouse.

The award was presented by Thomas Anderson, Save the Dunes Council of Michigan City executive director. The Alliance consists of conservation groups allied to improve communication and collaboration among conservation organizations, and create a greater conservation ethic in Indiana through public awareness and increased support.

Pelath was recognized by the alliance for his efforts to help Indiana join the Great Lakes Compact, a group made up of eight states surrounding the Great Lakes and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Last September, Pelath was named Conservation Legislator of the Year by the Indiana Wildlife Federation for his work on the Great Lakes Compact.

Pelath said the award was a tribute to his father, Richard Pelath, who died last July.

The Great Lakes Compact aims to enhance oversight and protect resources surrounding the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River Basin. Signed into law in 2008 by former President George W. Bush, the compact is designed to build consistent water-use practices, particularly in preventing diversion of Great Lakes resources to other parts of the country.
