CSX Repairs And Street Closures

Mayor Chuck Oberlie and City Engineer Bill Phelps issued the following statement:

“In an effort to improve public safety, train safety and railroad crossing conditions, CSX Transportation will be performing maintenance and repair work on three railroad crossings in Michigan City. As a result of this much needed work, the railroad crossings at Roeske Avenue, Greenwood Avenue and Carroll Avenue will be closed during the period of August 1 thru August 6, 2011.”

CSX will be removing the old asphalt crossing, installing new rail and then installing new asphalt and timber crossings at these locations. Residents should take an alternate route during this period.

Mayor Oberlie said, “I appreciate the public’s cooperation and patience during this repair work. Weather conditions may cause an extension of the closure schedules.”

Railroad crossings reopen after construction

MICHIGAN CITY — Railroad crossings at Roeske, Carroll and Greenwood Avenues are open today after being closed for more than a week while CSX Railroad employees began constructing a new continuous rail.

It took the company three or four days to re-lay the track. E&L Paving, in a contract with CSX Railroad, worked on paving the three crossings Monday morning and afternoon.

City engineer Boyd Phelps said the company will continue their work on creating a continuous rail and paving the crossings at a later date.

"CSX wanted to include Woodland Avenue in this project, but we thought that would leave too many streets closed," Phelps said.

The crossing at Woodland Avenue will be on the construction list next time.

The rail will move west from Greenwood Avenue, the final construction site to be paved Monday afternoon.
