Michigan City has had four murders in three months. If that keeps up, that works out to 16 murders a year. For a city with 31,479 residents, that is a murder rate of 50 per 100,000.

That puts Michigan City just behind #1 (St. Louis at 66 per 100,000). And well over Chicago (at 24.1) or Detroit (at 39.8).

Good job, Mayor Meer! Good job, Michigan City Police Department!

I am not sure if JR Schwartz is a citizen of Michigan City, but I am, and I will stand up to no-nothing bullies who propagate untrue statements in order to score political points for divisive end.

The murders that have occurred are a tragedy for those related to the dead individuals, their friends, the community at large, and especially the public safety professionals that have to deal with all of this. The police do get paid for this, so no excuses, but they are no way, shape or form responsible for acts of violence or any crime - they are just the men and women who signed up to clean it up for us (which I suspect JR Schwarz and his ilk, are not). We ought to feel sorry for these individuals, and the court system that is now burdened with dealing with the "perps", which, if you knew, are high school students (in two cases) and a person likely to be suffering from mental health issues (perhaps untreated due to cost and availability?). How sad is that? As a community we cry together, pray for the victims, forgive the perps (but not exonerate - big difference) and try to tighten our bonds tighter to prevent further tragedy.

Your 'cheap shot" at our Mayor is especially abhorrent and disgusting - not because I voted for the guy (I did), and will vote for him again (I will), but for your tawdry linkage as if to assign blame. Shame on you and everyone who thinks like you! Mayor Meer is one of the kindest, honest, honorable men in our world - if you don't so, next snow storm, look for his truck out on our streets helping! - and I will defend him against cheap shot artists like you any chance I get.

I hope readers will join me in condemning this type of attack and do their very best to vote in individuals like Mayor Meer, and keep the loud mouth, corrupt, lying, cynical "candidates" out of office.
