City by the Lake.org, The Voice of Michigan City, Indiana _ City Talk _ Welcome to Citybythelake.org

Posted by: southsider2k7 Dec 8 2006, 10:42 AM

Hi all, my name is Michael Gresham, and this is my site to give people a chance to connect in, and about, Michigan City Indiana. My vision is to give people a place to talk about their City through a well-moderated, open access forum. Initially I have areas set up for local news, sports, business, and an off topic area. This will give people a chance to talk about what is going on in their town, and exchange information with other people.

If people have ideas, questions, comments or anything else feel free to post them here, to send me an emai,l or a private message.

As you may know, I am trying to get people to send the link to everyone on their e-ddress list.

Do you think it would be better to have the posts in the threads in newest-to-oldest order? I do, because when you click on a topic, you don't want to see the original posts all the time, you want the new stuff. That is how most MBs are, I think.

Oldest to newest makes it easiest to read if they haven't seen that particular thread before... That's the way I have always seen it done.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Dec 23 2006, 09:27 AM

This is the first one I have seen like this.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Dec 27 2006, 01:40 PM

bimp!

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Dec 27 2006, 02:17 PM

Still think it is better new-to-old.

Posted by: Ang Dec 27 2006, 05:16 PM

Roger, keyboard tip: If you want to jump to the end of the page to see the last post without having to scroll through all the old stuff, hit Ctrl + End and you will jump to the bottom. To get back to the top, hit Ctrl + Home and poof! You're back to the top.

I have always seen these things oldest on top, but many have a short cut button at the top that will take you to the bottom. As a matter of fact, Feedback is the only place I've seen newest at the top.

Yeah some of the old bulletin boards had the new to old format, but I help run about a half dozen other message board, the largest with over 3500 members and 1.3 million posts, and I have yet to hear anyone else say it was backwards from what they were used to.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Dec 28 2006, 02:32 PM

Ohmigod! It's happened again--I'm right, and 3,502 people are wrong!

I used to go on the Left behind boards years ago before they changed it, runner's world, and a few others, and they all went new to old. If your experience is different, was it because you run all yours the same way? What is your experience with boards other people run?

I have hung out on ABC/LOST!, ESPN.com, Snopes, PaulMcCartney.com, NTN.com, and a few others off of the top of my head, at different times, and they are all formated the same way.

So is TAPS and many of the Yahoo groups I belong to

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Dec 28 2006, 05:17 PM

Well, ok, but it still is harder and less elegant (in the math proof sense) to do it your way. Too bad there is not an option to do either.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Dec 29 2006, 10:06 AM

It would be nice if Invision gave us the option to do it either way, but they don't unfortunately.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jan 15 2007, 01:17 PM

It does help to know how to move around faster using keyboards tips--thanks!

Regarding the letter to outline what MC needs in a mayor, I would be glad to proof it. I would suggest perhaps emailing it rather than doing it in the mb.

I wanted to say "Welcome" to all of joinees that have come in here lately. It is great to see so many new faces! Hopefully you all enjoy it here, and if you have any problems or questions, feel free to contact me either with a post here, a private message here, or through an email.

Sorry guys, I am running a little behind on the news! I had a long weekend, and did a whole lot of relaxing. I will try to get caught up tonight or tomorrow.

Posted by: southsider2k7 May 29 2007, 08:41 PM

Sorry its been a little quiet around here... I got picked for jury duty, so I haven't been able to get the board updated like I usually would. I should be done tomorrow.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik May 30 2007, 08:09 AM

Big case?

Posted by: southsider2k7 May 31 2007, 06:23 AM

Nah it was a pretty small civil case. It could have been solved years ago IMO. Personally I enjoyed the experience as it was the first time I had ever been called to jury duty, let alone served on a jury. I might be kind of a dork, but I love to see how our government and civil operations function. It was incredibly interesting to be on the inside of a jury trial and see the particulars of it.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik May 31 2007, 11:40 AM

I was on a jury some time ago when we lived in Bloomington. It was some case where a school administration apparatchik was suing for wrongful dismissal. It ended up as a directed verdict. I agree that it was very interesting being in on the machinations of the system.

I have had members of the family be witnesses in cases, and that was interesting, too.

In general, though, I am a lot more comfortable staying away from the courthouse!

I am looking forward to everything but having the baby in the car for that many hours... If it works out, I might get to go see Gettysburg.

Posted by: Ang Jun 19 2007, 10:13 AM

I've been to Gettysburg. It's really cool. Very eerie though when you think about all the people that died there during the civil war. You can almost feel the ghosts. If you have a chance, try to take a ghost tour. Whether or not you believe in them, the tours are very neat.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jun 20 2007, 01:12 PM

Gettysburg is AWESOME. Take a guided tour from the NPS.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jun 27 2007, 08:34 AM

Well we did get down to Gettysburg, and it was well worth the trip. We took the double decker 2 hour bus tour and it was incredible. The scope and the scale of what went on there is just awe-inspiring.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jun 27 2007, 10:31 AM

Gettysburg is a great place to visit. I was just there in May, and I already wanna go back.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jun 27 2007, 10:32 AM

I'd can't wait to go back when we have more time. It was really a tease at an incredible place.

Administrator,

Is there some way to change one's avatar but leave it on the posts already done? The effect would be that only one's new posts would have the new avatar.

Sorry, all posts reflect the current avatar, invision has no way to change that.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik May 12 2008, 11:43 AM

I think if one wanted to change one's avatar, one could change one's ID.

Posted by: Ang May 12 2008, 11:58 AM

If you change the name on Roger's account, but he's still user #3, isn't that going to change his name on all his previous posts as user #3 as well? That's the way it works on the other message board I spend time on, but it may be differnet software.

Your name would change on your post, but any of your old posts that had been previously quoted would be saved in whatever name you were using at that point in time... (I had to go back and look myself.)

Posted by: Ang May 12 2008, 06:02 PM

Do you start over with the number of posts? Fr'instance, if Roger had 2000 posts and changed his name to Bob, would Bob then have 2000 posts, or just the number beginning after he changed his name?

In the Scrap Metal thread, http://www.citybythelake.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1360&st=0&gopid=9971&#entry9971, I tried to type the law I was referring to, IC 25-37.5-1.2b, with the final 'b' in parentheses. There are keyboard shortcuts for smilies. You hit on one there. For example if you type : and ) together you get smile.gif

Can they be turned off on my keyboard?

And I am searching for a thread that was about Funny Lines from the Campaign, but I cannot find it. Is there another way to look? Maybe by going through all the threads I started? I can't remember if I did or not, by the way.

In the window that opens when you do a reply, below the area where you type, there's a section titled "Post Options." If you uncheck the box that says "Enable emoticons," you won't have inadvertant smilies.

:)

See?

Now if I could figure out how to do a letter c in parenthesis without having it turn into the copyright symbol, I'll be happy.

Both of those milestones are very big achievements that we are very proud of here! It really goes to say a lot to the quality of posting that we have had here in the year of existence of Citybythelake. If there wasn't good conversation and contributions from many people, no one else would be posting or reading here.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!

If you notice on the bottom of the page there is a boxed that has in it "from last 30 days". The default is set to there to keep the burn off of the server. If you click into that box, you can change the time frame to go back to day one if you desire.

Posted by: IndyTransplant Jan 10 2009, 10:42 AM

Hi all. Just wanted to introduce myself. My husband and I moved to Michigan City a couple of months ago. We are formerly from Indianapolis. Everyone we have met here keeps asking us WHY would we move to MC from Indy? I love Indianapolis and believe it is the nicest and most friendly capital city in the country. We loved living there. However after 30 or 40 years, we have enjoyed the best Indy can offer and we still go back to visit at least once monthly. Our daughter moved to Michigan City more than a year ago. During our visits to her, we found we really liked the area and decided to try to move here also. My husband is an avid fisherman and loves ice fishing. When we lived in Indy, he had to drive at least an hour or more to find really good fishing areas. My work is done at home (I am an online software trainer) and so I can live anywhere there is a phone and internet connection. The added benefit is that I do not have to drive to work. I love the beautiful Michigan City snows in the winter (again maybe because I do not have to drive to work in them) and the vibrant lakeshore summers here. I will say I am impressed so far with the city’s response to the snows and ice – the main roads here are almost always cleared and passable in a very short time period. Indianapolis has a little more trouble keeping up at times and it takes them longer (but of course they have more main roads also). I realize that we will be considered newbies here for at least twenty years, but we now embrace MC as our home and look forward to meeting many friends here.

Maybe you answered this before I began reading CityBytheLake. If so please direct me to that posting, but my question is how do you enjoy living in Wyoming? We camped there a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Even strung a long dipole antenna and made many ham radio contacts up and down the west coast from the campsite.

An old friend, Brent Manning, took the job as DNR director there but his wife tired of western living and he returned to Illinois to run the park district in Dupage county.

Hi Michelle's Mom biggrin.gif

Did I spy a Fagen Pharmacy on Franklin Square?

You'll have to excuse me...I've been under the weather for a few weeks and finally got out of the house on Saturday to do some shopping at the outlet mall.....while driving down Franklin I saw a object of beauty...a new store on the square. Is this a sign from above? laugh.gif

Thanks to all for the nice welcome.
Ang, I have never been to Wyoming. I am hoping to travel around in the future and look forward to seeing Wyoming during my travels also.
I have been reading as much of this forum as I can and feel I know many of you already (just from your posts). I am sure I will enjoy Michigan City. I already love the friendliness and helpfulness of the people here.

As of today we have 200 registered members! And we are less than 100 posts away from 20,000 posts!

Welcome to all new members. There are so many of you registering lately that I can't keep up. I know a lot of you are here because of the Redistricting thread, but I hope you will take the time to look at and post in the other threads. We have a lot going on here. There are book reviews, restaurant reviews, polls, and quizzes. Plus, we don't always discuss 'City, there are many other discussions related to National and World events.

So, please dive in, catch up on some of the older stuff, and throw your two cents out there. We're glad you're here.

It was just released on Tuesday, it's nice, not sure of any cost, their number is 1-800-901-5491.

3.0 is $250 right now, and it won't have all the bugs out of it for months.

I want to issue a big "thank you" to each and every person involved with citybythelake.org. From the people who just stop by to read, to the admin/mod staff here, each of you has played a vital role at making this site a huge success in 2009. Just in the last couple of months, this is the first local place to break such stories as the school closing potential, NIPSCO being rated as one of the worst polluters in the USA, Ohio Street falling apart a month after repaving, and the MC boys basketball team being asked in the the Valpo U holiday invitational. Best of all was sharing the reactions and feeling surrounding every story in Michigan City with all of you. I look forward to an even better 2010!

Thanks all!

Michael Gresham

It is awesome to see so many people following and contributing to this incredible site. This wouldn't be possible without all of the great personalities and contributions of all of the people here.

THANKS AGAIN!!!

We've had a bunch of new members lately, so I want to bump this up and say Welcome to the Newbies!!!

Also, I want to remind everyone that our 4th Annual Meet & Greet will be held at Matey's Restaurant in Michigan City on Monday Dec 27th at 7:00 pm.

All members are welcome to join us, you do not need to RSVP but it would be nice to let us know if you are positive you will be there.

Additionally, I would like to tell you some "fun" stuff about the board:

--When you are in a forum list, and you see a little red box next to the thread title, you can go to the last unread (by you) post in that thread by clicking the red box.

--You can bold, italicize, underline or perform any other text function in "quick reply" by simply putting a [b] at the beginning of your word and at the end put [/i]. Now, to keep from changing my font in that last sentence, I had to use different letters, but b= bold, i=italics, u=underline, etc. This also works if you want to put a paragraph in quotes. You would type [quote] at the beginning of the paragraph and at the end, use the same thing, only with the "/" symbol before the word quote-inside the brackets.

you can change the color or size of your font the same way. you would type color=red (or size=6) with the square brackets around it-- [ ] -- to have a red font and at the end you would put that little "/" symbol and just type the word color between the brackets.. [/color]

Season's Greetings, and Happy Holidays!!!

Every thread should have a post in it once a year or so.

I'm a chat junkie from way back. I used to go by Bongwater Q. Liberalstein but have mellowed out a bit since those days.

Really nice site -- well-designed, easy to navigate.

Can I use regular bb code? IMG tags for photos?

What's the procedure for posting video links? flash?

Posted by: Ang Apr 3 2012, 11:48 PM

Um....we don't really have a protocol for that. If you can make it work, do it. Welcome to the site. I love your input!

IMG tags work for sure. I don't think flash is supported. For video links you need to turn html on. bb code I am not sure about.

I include links to websites with more information, but feel free to post however you want.

We thank you for joining our board and look forward to your input.

Please remember to be respectful of others as that is our number 1 rule. It's ok to disagree, but play nice.

You can scroll through old comments in this thread to learn tips and tricks to navigate this board, also you can ask if you have questions. In City Living, there is a thread called CBTL: Catch all anything thread. You can post your questions there and someone will answer them.

Again, Welcome to City By The Lake!

Don't forget to check out the calendar of events. There is a lot of fun stuff going on over the next several weeks. Get a jump on your friends and be "in the know" about what's going on!
I've got September updated through the 15th. If there is anything I missed, please PM me, or you can add it to the calendar yourself, just let an Admin know so we can approve it and make it viewable by all.
Thanks!

I see we have had a few new people sign up lately. Again, I want to welcome all the newbies to our site and remind everyone that our number one rule around here is PLAY NICE-lest ye be censored. laugh.gif wink.gif

Please remember to check out the calendar of events--upcoming events are listed at the bottom of the home page. I've been working hard to keep up with it. If I missed anything, please feel free to add and PM (personal message) me so I can approve it for public viewing.

If anyone has editing or formatting questions, you can either PM a member of the mod/admin team, or simply post your question the Catch All Anything Thread located in City Living.

Thanks to the Newbies for joining the board. We have been around longer than I anticipated and am thankful to all of our members for making this place what it is and keeping us alive--this December we will be celebrating our 6th birthday!
