Michigan City Advising Residents and Visitors of Possible Exposure to Lead-Based Paint Dust

Posted by Region News Team on October 5, 2015 | 8:32 am in Region News

The City of Michigan City is advising residents and visitors of a possible exposure to lead-based paint dust in the 800 block of Franklin Street. Here is the notice from the city:

Notice to the Public of a Possible Exposure to Lead Paint Dust
The City of Michigan City is advising its residents and visitors of a possible exposure to lead based paint dust from an improper procedure performed by a contractor at 829 Franklin St.
On September 23, 2015, the Michigan City Planning & Zoning Department received a complaint about a contractor blocking the sidewalk and parking spaces in front of a building at 829 Franklin St., Michigan City, Indiana. When the City inspectors arrived at the scene, there were large amounts of debris along the streets and sidewalks in this area from a paint removal process being improperly performed by a contractor at 829 Franklin Street. Due to the age of the building and the possibility of the presence of lead based paint, the City inspectors contacted Amereco Engineering, a consulting firm, to perform testing in the area around the site. Amereco Engineering confirmed the presence of lead contamination in the area outside and inside the neighboring businesses, streets and sidewalks within a one (1) block radius of the area.
The City inspectors, along with Amereco Engineering, contacted the LaPorte County Health Department and other state and federal agencies for assistance. In addition, an immediate cleanup effort was undertaken by the City, which included an assessment of storm sewers by the Sanitary District, control of runoff by the Sanitary District, the rinsing down of affected trees, buildings, streets, and sidewalks by the Michigan City Fire Department, and the temporary closing of Franklin Street and 9th Street by the Michigan City Police Department. In addition, the LaPorte County Health Department addressed local businesses affected assuring them they could reopen after the City’s cleanup efforts, and the Health Department passed out literature to the local businesses regarding how to properly clean the interiors of the effected buildings.
Following the City’s cleanup effort, the affected areas were retested, and the City is awaiting the results to see if further remediation is necessary. Anyone with questions or concerns pertaining to health and/or clean-up is directed to contact the LaPorte County Health Department at lphealth@laportecounty.org
