HAMMOND | A man shot in the back during a police chase has reached an undisclosed settlement in a federal lawsuit filed against the Michigan City Police Department.

Daniel Sherrod was a passenger in a vehicle traveling on Welnetz Road in Michigan City on June 20, 2012, when Officers Ronald Skibins and Byron Maxey pulled the vehicle over. Sherrod ran from the vehicle, entered an apartment and closed the door, court records stated.

Sherrod claimed he was unarmed during the foot chase but Officer Skibins pursued him with his gun drawn and kicked down the door to the department. When Sherrod came out of the apartment with his hands up, Officer Skibins allegedly struck him on the head four times with his pistol. When Sherrod broke free, Skibins shot Sherrod once in the back, court records stated.
