The East Coast had a 5.9 earthquake centered in Virgina at about 12:51 our time. Reports have the quake being felt in Chicago and Detroit, and apparently according to facebook posts, even in City. Anyone out there feel it, or notice it?

Nothing here in Westville, but the one that hit New Madrid back in 08...almost knocked me out of my bed. Other folks felt this current in one in Michiana:

I'm curious if the Cook Nuke Plant in Berrien was shut down as well.

Office workers at the Cook Nuclear Plant reported feeling a small rumble Tuesday afternoon following the earthquake in Virginia, activating the plant's emergency plan.

"We have a very specific procedure that has us walk down and inspect safety systems and components that might be needed in the event the plant would need to be shut down. In this case today both units were operating at 100-percent power and remained so throughout the event," said AEP spokesperson Bill Schalk.

No damage was found at Cook and the plant resumed normal operation just before 5:30 p.m.

Cook is built to withstand the damage that could be caused by the nearest fault line, which is located about 400 miles away in southern Missouri.

"They [engineers] looked at the highest activity level and then designed a plan to be able to safely shut down if an earthquake of a slightly higher level happened," said Schalk.

Tuesday's earthquake shut down a nuclear plant in Virginia, which brought back memories of Japan's earthquake, which led to a nuclear emergency.

Schalk said the Fukushima plant was able to shut down safely following the earthquake however the tsunami caused most of the damage. While Bridgman is in no danger of a tsunami, it is at risk of a seiche.

"If you had a severe atmospheric change on one side, the water would come up and that's actually happened and it's part of our design basis," said Schalk.

The largest seiche was an 8 ft. wave that hit Michigan City in 1954. Cook was built to withstand an 11 ft. wave.
