MICHIGAN CITY — A cold case has been reopened. Now, a local family is waiting for a jury to begin its work.

Charles Gerron of Michigan City is charged with murdering 17-year-old Ne'Keisha Hodges Hawkins.

The Hawkins family has been waiting for six years for this day. Ne'Keisha died in 2011.

Police say she died from a gunshot wound at a local park.

For five years there were no arrests. Her parents never have never given up hope that one day they would be in this courthouse.

Right after the shooting happened, police arrested someone else with her murder. But the state dropped the case.

Late last year investigators found new evidence. That's when police arrested Charles Gerron.

Prosecutors offered Gerron a plea deal to a lesser charge of criminal recklessness when they say witnesses recanted their story.

The judge rejected that plea. He said Gerron needed to be tried by a jury.

More than 60 potential jurors were at the courthouse Monday. 12 of those were seated by the end of the day.

Opening statements are expected to begin Tuesday morning.

MICHIGAN CITY — A young man who says he saw what happened the night a Michigan City teenager was killed – told his story to the jury Wednesday.

17-year-old Ne'Keisha Hodges Hawkins was killed in 2011 leaving a local park. Charles Gerron is charged with her murder.

Prosecutors brought two significant witnesses to the stand.

Michael Cooper was15-years-old in 2011, but he told the jurors that he saw Gerron that night and it was Gerron who fired three shots into the crowd.

Cooper says that he was friends with Gerron and when he got to the party he borrowed a moped witnesses say they saw Gerron ride to the party on.

When he got back to the park, the party was over--that's when he says he saw gunshots being fired into the air as Gerron pulled out a gun and fired back into the crowd three times.

He says later on that night he saw Gerron at his aunt’s house and that he overheard Gerron asked for bleach to clean his hands.

Cooper is in custody right now for failure to comply with a subpoena. In March he told Michigan City detectives that he didn't know anything about what happened that night.

The defense says the only reason he's saying differently now, is because he wants to get out of jail. Cooper denied that point and said that, now, he just wants to tell the truth.

Another witness, Marcus Black, took the stand and says he doesn't know exactly who the shooter was that night--but that he saw a man fire, run away and hop on a moped leaving the scene.

MICHIGAN CITY — A man originally accused in the murder of a Michigan City teenager was the main witness Thursday.

Another man, Charles Gerron, is now charged with the murder of 17-year-old Ne'Keisha Hodges Hawkins.

While both men had guns that night -- investigators say Gerron fired the gun that killed Hawkins.

Cameron Kent admits firing his gun that night. But Kent says he fired it into the air.

He told the jury that it wasn't his bullet that struck and killed Hawkins.

Witnesses have testified that they saw both Kent and Gerron with guns. So far, prosecutors brought 11 witnesses to the stand.

They're trying to prove that Gerron knowingly fired his gun into a crowd of people.

Throughout the past three days the defense's argument has revolved around one main point--- witnesses' stories have changed since 2011.

Many of the witnesses were crime scene investigators and police.

Hawkins family has been in the courtroom during all the testimony. But many parts of the trial have been tough for them to listen to. They've had to leave he courtroom at times.

QUOTE
Jurors in a Michigan City murder case visited the scene of the crime today.

Ne'Keisha Hodges Hawkins was murdered in 2011.

She was leaving a party at Kreuger Memorial Park when gunfire rang out.

Charles Gerron is charged with her murder.

Throughout the trial the prosecution has shown jurors aerial maps of the road where the murder happened. They've had witnesses point out where they think Charles Gerron was shooting and where Ne'Keisha Hodges Hawkins fell.

But prosecutors thought it would be helpful for jurors to see the road themselves. That's why they took them to the scene of the crime.

Witnesses say that Gerron shot at the top of the hill on Liberty Trail. They say he shot three times into the crowd and that he wasn't very far away from Hawkins.

One witness says after Gerron shot he turned around and ran back north on Liberty Trail.

On Friday we heard from Nekeisha's cousin. She says she saw Gerron run past her that night and admit he shot someone.

QUOTE
MICHIGAN CITY — An ex-girlfriend of the man on trial for murdering a teenager took the stand Monday.

She told jurors she saw Charles Gerron with a gun the night Ne'Keisha Hodges Hawkins died.

Hawkins was killed leaving a party at a local park in 2011. She was just 17.

Skyeisha Pender dated Gerron in 2011. She says the night Hawkins died, Gerron showed her a gun.

She says she saw firsthand Gerron fire that gun into a crowd.

Before her testimony, jurors were shown a video of Gerron's interview with police the day after Hawkins died.

He was wearing a green shirt. He told detectives it's what he wore to the party.

But his ex-girlfriend says that night he was wearing a black and white checkered shirt.

In that video Gerron also told jurors that he heard gunshots and had his mom pick him up.

But witnesses have testified he left that night on a moped.

Pender says she and Gerron took pictures that night at the party and that it will prove what Gerron was wearing.

MICHIGAN CITY — A family that has waited six years for their daughter's murder case to go to trial has the verdict.

Jurors in a Michigan City courthouse found Charles Gerron guilty.

He' is charged with the death of Ne'Keisha Hodges Hawkins. She was killed in 2011 leaving a local park.

When the judge read the guilty verdict it was silent in the courtroom. But you could see members of the Hodges Hawkins family bow their heads and begin to cry.

Jurors decided that Gerron knowingly shot his gun into a crowd of people July of 2011-- and that a bullet from his gun struck and killed Hawkins.

Nekeisha's family had to leave moments after the verdict was read. They were escorted out of the courthouse by police.

Nekeisha's aunt says it's Nekeisha's dads birthday and that all he wanted was a guilty verdict.

MICHIGAN CITY — The father of a 17-year-old girl gunned down at a birthday party six years ago said he felt relieved as a jury found her shooter guilty of murder Tuesday night.

"I was going to get justice, period. I didn’t want my daughter to become no cold case," Kalvon Hawkins said a day after the verdict.

After deliberating for five hours Tuesday, a LaPorte Superior Court 1 jury found Charles Gerron guilty in the 2011 shooting death of NeKeisha Hodges-Hawkins.

Gerron could face 45 to 65 years at his Oct. 26 sentencing.

Hodges-Hawkins died from a single gunshot to the back of the head. Close to her was James Sanders, who was struck on his lower leg.

According to authorities, Hodges-Hawkins was among 50 or more people leaving a birthday party in Michigan City after a verbal altercation erupted between two women inside.

At least two men from rival gangs exchanged heated words in the parking lot when six shots rang out, according to court records.

QUOTE
At 2 p.m. a murder trial six years in the making is finally coming to an end.

A jury last month found Charles Gerron guilty of the murder of a Michigan City teen back in 2011.

Gerron is convicted of pulling out a gun at a party, firing it into a crowd of teenagers and killing Nekeisha Hodges Hawkins.

Gerron could face a maximum sentence of 65 years.

Today has been a long time coming for the Hodges-Hawkins family.

For more than five years no one was arrested for Nekeisha's death.

It wasn't until late last year that new leads led Michigan City police to Gerron.

The trial lasted for more than a week with multiple witnesses taking the stand.

Gerron's defense focused on the fact many witnesses changed their stories from the time of this killing.

In the end jurors decided Gerron knowingly fired the gun that killed Hodges-Hawkins.

Gerron's attorney says no matter what the sentence is, they will file an appeal.

WSBT 22's Jessi Schultz was in court for the trial. She will provide updates on the air and online.
