On April 30th, the folks from Comcast will be once again teaming up with the citizens of Michigan City, this time to benefit the MC Senior Center. The “Comcast Cares Day” main project will be the creation of a boardwalk for our Senior Citizens that will extend from the Senior Center down to the beach. Volunteers are needed and the more volunteers we get, the more financial support we receive ! Please call Mike Dempsey at 219 878-3138 to volunteer your club, church group, office staff, family and friends for a great cause ! Again, call Mike Dempsey at 219 878-3138 to lend a helping hand to our Senior Citizens and the Michigan City Senior Center.

Volunteers will add ramp to beach

MICHIGAN CITY — Volunteers will put together a 700-foot handicapped-accessible ramp at Washington Park Beach.

The ramp will allow more people to enjoy the beach, Senior Center Director Tara Miller said.

The project will be funded in part by Comcast as part of the April 30 Comcast Cares Day, an annual company-wide service event.

Miller said boosting the number of registered volunteers at the event is important because that will determine how much of the project Comcast will fund.

The volunteers will help put together several 25-foot sections of the ramp that Haas & Associates, Guardian Riders and American Auto Body have volunteered to design and build.

The ramp will allow not only allow people with mobility difficulties to access the beach, but also those with strollers and others as well, Miller said.

“We’re hoping that it’s successful enough that we can do this throughout our beaches,” she said.

Miller said she is hoping for about 1,000 volunteers.

Volunteers don’t have to work on the ramp project if the don’t want to, Miller said. Other volunteers will clean and plant in the Washington Park area.

“We’ll find something for everyone to do,” Miller said.

According to a press release, breakfast and lunch will be provided by Comcast for all volunteers. The event will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers can register at the Senior Center, Two on the Lake, or at www.emichigancity.com. For more information call Miller at 873-1504.

Local project benefits from Comcast Cares Day

MICHIGAN CITY — The new boardwalk to the edge of Lake Michigan will be helpful to people who use wheelchairs.

”And for people using walkers and for parents with children in strollers,” said Joe Coar, Tonn & Blank vice president of operations.

”And for people wheeling coolers down to the beach,” Police Chief Mark Swistek added. “I’ve been down here on beach patrol, and I’ve seen people sitting on top of their coolers in the sand. When we ask if they’re all right, they usually tell us they had been trying to get the cooler through the sand, ‘but I had to take a rest.’ “

Coar and Swistek were among the 600 volunteers working Saturday at Michigan City Senior Center and throughout Washington Park, including Washington Park Zoo, on Comcast Cares Day. Some helpers were Comcast employees and others, like Coar and Swistek, were community members.

According to a Senior Center press release, Comcast Cares Day is the company’s annual day of service in which tens of thousands of Comcast employees, along with their families and friends, volunteer in their local communities.

Retired attorney Patrick Donoghue spent some time Saturday sweeping sand. Chuckling, Donoghue poked a little fun at himself.

”This just goes to show you what four years of college and three years of law school will get you,” he said.

Donoghue retired as attorney to the park board.

Boards for the boardwalk were cut at Tonn & Blank, and other work was completed at American Auto Body even before the various parts arrived at the beach. Coar said members of the Exchange Club of Michigan City and Guard Riders were out in force Saturday.

Guard Rider member Greg Lutz said the group includes people who have joined forces “to support the troops, to support veterans and to support those less fortunate.”

Many members enjoy riding motorcycles, he added.
