Published: Friday, February 12, 2010 4:17 AM CST
MICHIGAN CITY — Michigan Township Trustee Mary Lombard will seek the nomination for re-election as Michigan township trustee in the May 4 Republican primary, she has announced.

Lombard is the first woman to be elected trustee of Michigan Township and is in charge of providing assistance to residents with a variety of essentials including housing, utilities, food and medication, she said in a news release. She has garnered numerous awards and honors for her elected public service, she point out.

Michigan Township was named Indiana’s Township of Year in 1995 and Lombard was awarded the Athena Award from Women in Management in 1997. She was inducted into honorary membership of the Phi Alpha Society Zeta Pi chapter at Indiana University for her commitment to professional social work values and ethics and her dedication to community service in 2007.

Lombard credits her partnerships with government officials and community social service serving agencies in preventing duplication of services while eliminating fraud and abuse to ensure property taxes are utilized to assist an increasing population of those in truly in need.

“Especially during these uncertain times, township residents can be assured of a compassionate yet common sense approach in the delivery of township services,” Lombard wrote in her release.

Lombard serves on the board of directors Meals on Wheels, the Business Advisory Council of Michiana Resources, the local board of the National Emergency Food and Shelter program, La Porte County Trustees Association and is an official protective payee for the Social Security Administration ensuring proper care and treatment for those unable to manage their own financial affairs.

She has served on the board of directors of Indiana’s regional Workforce Investment Board, North Central Community Action Agency, the Stepping Stone Shelter for Women, Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, the Miss Indiana Scholarship Program, the Finance Committee for Citizens Concerned for the Homeless, Indiana’s Criminal Justice subcommittee of the Commission on the Social Status of African American Males, and the Indiana Township Association. She was chairman of the Trail Creek Republican Party and has served as delegate to the Republican state convention and as a Republican precinct committeewoman.
