MICHIGAN CITY — City Councilwoman Angie Nelson said Thursday she doesn’t plan to seek re-election nor run for any other office when her first term ends.

Instead, she’s interested in furthering her education. She will finish a master’s program through the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University-Northwest this year. She’s considering schools across the country, but doesn’t want to leave town until her eldest daughter finishes high school. Her daughter will be a junior next school year.

Nelson said she had potential candidates in mind she would like to see replace her, but she wouldn’t name them. She said she wants to see younger people consider running for office.

“I just wish we could get people who aren’t so political to run,” she said.

Nelson said she’s always been very active in the community. That habit will continue, even after she finishes her term, she said.

“It’s not like I’m going to be inactive,” she said. “I just won’t be passing ordinances.”

She praised current members as being functional and well-rounded.

“This is one of the best mixes we’ve had,” she said.
