I started working midnight's part-time at the cookie factory at U.S. 20 and Ohio St. last August. I always park in the lot across the street on Ohio St. they have a Yield to pedestrian sign posted both ways on Ohio St. but motorists usually disobey them, including Michigan City police cruisers.

Pedestrian killed by semi

MICHIGAN CITY — Local police and La Porte County Coroner John Sullivan are working to determine the identity of a pedestrian who was killed when he was struck by a semi tractor-trailer at 8:11 a.m. Friday at U.S. 20 and Ohio Street in Michigan City.

According to a release from Michigan City Police Department, Lt. Jeff Loniewski, commander of the traffic division, a preliminary investigation revealed that a pedestrian described as “a 60-to-70-year-old white male stepped off the southeast curb and into the path” of a semi tractor.

“The pedestrian died upon impact from what appeared to be massive internal injuries to his lower trunk and extremities,” Loniewski said.

The driver of the truck, 42-year-old Larry Mitchell Waters, of Snow Hill, Maryland, was not injured.

Waters, who was traveling northbound on Ohio Street approaching U.S. 20, was driving a black 2007 Kenworth semi tractor-trailer unit owned by Worldwide Shippers of La Porte.

The eastbound lanes of U.S. 20 were closed for about two hours to allow investigators from the Michigan City Police Department’s Traffic Division and troopers from the Indiana State Police Motor Carrier Division to collect evidence.

Indiana Department of Transportation employees assisted with directing traffic.

“At this point the investigation remains ongoing as the Michigan City Police Department and La Porte County Coroner’s Office attempt to identify the victim,” Loniewski said.

Man hit, killed by truck in Michigan City identified
By Stan Maddux Times Correspondent

MICHIGAN CITY | A man killed when he stepped in front of a semi truck in Michigan City last week has been identified.

William Schroeder, 76, stepped out from behind a car into the path of a semi about 8 a.m. Friday at U.S. 20 and Ohio Street.

LaPorte County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Huffman said Schroeder was released from jail in Hammond last month and caught a ride from a cellmate to Michigan City.

Huffman said Schroeder was living in the woods just north and east of U.S. 421 and U.S. 20.

Schroeder once lived near Calumet City. Prior to coming to Michigan City, he had a roommate in Hammond who took him in he was homeless, Huffman said.
