Winter storm watch expected Friday night in LaPorte, St. Joseph counties

Times Staff Dec 7, 2017 Updated 6 hrs ago

LaPorte and St. Joseph counties will be under a winter storm watch beginning Friday night and lasting through Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy and blowing snow is possible, the NWS said, with wind gusts of 20 to 35 mph.

Drivers should plan for difficult travel conditions, the weather service said. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches are possible, with localized heavier amounts expected.

A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel, the NWS said.

A dusting of snow overnight made for a slippery Thursday morning commute throughout Northwest Indiana.

Snow is expected to fall mainly before noon Saturday in Lake and Porter counties, while LaPorte County could see a transition to lake-effect snow flurries Saturday afternoon and evening.

Two major accidents on Toll Road just minutes apart

By Joshua Short | Posted: Sat 11:40 AM, Dec 09, 2017

ISP responded to two separate accidents "almost simultaneously" on the toll road near exit 77, Saturday morning.

Before 10:30 a.m., ISP responded to an accident involving a semi-trailer, which rolled over a guard rail and landed on its driver-side. It was heading Westbound on the toll road, according to police.

The driver, was said to be doing fine, but very shaken up.

Also, an SUV hit a guard rail just feet from where the semi accident occurred.

The SUV then jumped the rail and rolled down an embankment.

ISP tells us two people were transferred to Memorial Hospital, where their conditions are unknown.

Stay with NewsCenter 16 both on-air and online for the latest details.

Snow and winds making LaPorte County roads dangerous

Bob Kasarda

Heavy lake effect snow is causing dangerous conditions on roads throughout LaPorte County and the threat is expected to continue as winds pick up tonight, according to police.

"We are asking for people to stay off of the roads and advising against travel," LaPorte County police Captain Michael Kellems said.

Police say as much as nine inches of snow has fallen, with the area north of LaPorte to the Michigan state line the hardest hit.

Central LaPorte County has also had heavy snow fall, police said.

Police have responded to numerous slide-offs and minor crashes.

Strong winds predicted for tonight are expected to make drifting a major concern, particularly on north-south roads, police said

Our next advisory has gone up. So far the wind forecast is for more NW winds, so that would most likely mean the worst of the effects would be through the typical region of Michigan through the general New Prairie area, but as always small changes in wind direction can mean big snows in short amounts of time.

... Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 PM EST /3 PM
CST/ Wednesday to 7 am EST /6 am CST/ Friday...

* what... lake effect snow expected. Very cold wind chills
expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during
the morning commute on Thursday. Total snow accumulations of 4
to 8 inches, with localized amounts up to 1 foot, are expected.
Expect wind chills to range from 5 below zero to 20 below zero.

* Where... La Porte, St. Joseph in and Elkhart counties.

* When... for the Winter Weather Advisory, from 4 PM EST /3 PM
CST/ Wednesday to 7 am EST /6 am CST/ Friday. For the Wind
Chill Advisory, until 9 am EST /8 am CST/ Wednesday.

* Additional details... be prepared for reduced visibilities at
times. The cold wind chills will cause frostbite in as little
as 30 minutes to exposed skin.

LaPorte government offices closing due to heavy snowfall

Stan Maddux

LaPorte County Commissioner Rich Mrozinski said the snow appeared to be falling at a rate of 2 inches an hour while he was removing snow at his Rolling Prairie area home.

"I don’t want to see people put their life in danger to try and stay at work here," Mrozinski said.

LaPorte received 15 inches of snow Thursday, and another 6.5 inches had fallen Friday by 11 a.m., said Todd Taylor, superintendent of the LaPorte Water Department, which records daily precipitation totals.

LaPorte County Highway Department Superintendent Bob Young said all roads were still passable, but covered in snow and ice, at 10 a.m.

Plowing snow was presenting a challenge keeping roads open, yet "we’re staying up with it," he said.

Young said lake-effect snow totals were much greater in LaPorte and areas to the north and east.

In Michigan City, Mayor Ron Meer estimated about half as much snow has fallen there since midnight Thursday.

Visibility, though, has been down to just a few hundred feet when the heavier lake-effect bands move over the city, he said.

"It’s coming down on us pretty good," Meer said at about 10:30 a.m.

Meer said he was not planning to close city government early.

"The roads are not in the best of shape, but we’re staying on top of it," Meer said.

The lake-effect snow totals can vary greatly depending on wind direction and where the heaviest bands fall.

Young, who lives in LaCrosse, estimated just a half foot of snow has fallen there since the first storm of the year moved through around Christmas.

It's slick and slushy on the roads; weather advisory continues until noon

Times Staff

Roads were slick in some areas early Friday, and forecasters warned the sleet and snow could continue falling until noon.

Indiana State Police for the Toll Road said they were responding to a serious crash about 6:45 a.m. near Ind. 39 in the LaPorte area.

State police at the Lowell post said icy, slushy conditions had not caused too much of a problem yet.

Three westbound South Shore Line commuter trains — 106, 108 and 110 — were delayed 20 to 30 minutes because of an issue with overhead lines, according to several alerts.

Several schools announced delays and closures.

A winter weather advisory for Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Newton and Jasper counties remained in effect until noon, according to the National Weather Service.

A light glaze of ice and a total of 1 to 2 inches of snow and ice accumulation were expected this morning in Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties. LaPorte County could see up to 3 inches of accumulated sleet and snow and up to a tenth of an inch of ice.

The freezing rain, sleet and snow was expected to turn to snow later Friday morning. Lake-effect snow showers were expected to develop this afternoon from Chicago southeast into Lake County and shift east into Lake and Porter counties later this evening.

The weather service predicted temperatures in LaPorte County would begin falling into the teens and lower 20s later today, with wind chills near zero by late afternoon and tonight.

Lake-effect snow showers could persist Saturday, and more snow was expected to develop across the area late Sunday into Monday morning.
