Well I guess the obvious first question would be to ask What do you think of the bill before the Indiana legislature to revamp county government? What would its net effect be on LaPorte County if it was enacted.

The three commissioner system allows for fair and equal represnetation of the entire county. In a city where the intrests and needs of most residents are pretty much uniform the single executive (Mayor) works well. The diversity of the county would make this a tough way to insure that all intrests were properly represented.

Kernan/Shepard cites the cost savings associated with a single executive system as key benefit for the change. Currently all three commissioners are part time at a salary of 28,000.00 per year. A county executive would have to be a full time position in the $65,000.00 range and would need additional admin assitance for another 26,000.00 per year. The cost difference is pretty much a wash.

The plan looks good on paper but when you begin to look at all the different situations that can occur in a county it is vital to have the diverse knowledge that a board can bring

Has there started to be some definition of how the stimulus funds are going to be distributed, and if so, what kind of projects are we looking at on a county wide basis?

The state has begun holding meetings throughout the State to collect the project requests. The county has submitted in excess of 20 different projects. Sewer extensions, road improvements, rebuilding the Franklin street brindge, rennovation of the court house all were included in the submission.

What about allocating stimulus funds for the Vocational bldg the schools want to build? That would ease the burden of a 70K debt, wouldn't it?

70 million, not thousand. In the county's defense, I don't think it falls under their umbrella.
