MERRILLVILLE -

A northwestern Indiana town has approved a company's proposal to install 6,800 solar panels and sell the sun-generated power to a utility.

The Times of Munster reports that the Merrillville Town Council unanimously approved a variance Tuesday allowing Lincoln Solar LLC to install the panels in the Lake County town.

Lincoln Solar project manager Chris Little says construction of the $6 million solar power complex could begin in the spring and would take three to four months to complete.

NIPSCO spokesman Nick Meyer says Lincoln Solar has reached a 15-year agreement to sell the utility the project's electricity at 26 cents per kilowatt hour.

Lincoln Solar says about 25 workers would be hired to erect the solar power installation, but when finished it would employ only one person.

Something doesn’t make sense here. . . . . . I’m paying NIPSCO a little over 14 cents per kilowatt hour and they’re going to buy from this outfit for 26 cents?

I think the word you are struggling to find is "subsidies".

So Merrillville is lucky because they get a boondoggle that will employ 1 person and Michigan City is unlucky because it gets actual jobs?

Two things I am sure go into this. #1, this satisfies something in the $600 million settlement with the EPA over their polluting plants. #2, green energy is much more expensive than fossil fuels. I would imagine if this is the direction we are going, it looks like we should plan on our bills doubling eventually.
