MICHIGAN CITY | A Michigan City man has been charged with making child pornography, and police believe there might be more victims who have not yet come forward.

Brian Newman, 46, of 603 Benton St., is charged with manufacturing and possessing child pornography, along with child exploitation. He was arraigned Wednesday in federal court.

"Several of Mr. Newman's victims have already been found across the country, and it is believed that there are still more that have yet to be identified," said Detective Sgt. Matt Barr, the lead investigator in the case.

Additional charges are expected, police said.

On May 22, police said local law enforcement officers and members of the FBI task force went to two locations in Michigan City to serve Newman with an arrest warrant.

He was taken into custody at U.S. 421 and LaPorte County Road 300 North.

Police did not release specifics about the case but revealed his arrest stems from a multi-jurisdictional investigation that began in September 2011.

According to police, Newman solicited children under the aliases Deandre Moore and Jerome Moore.

Newman worked with a second man who went by the alias Mark Brown.

Police said "Brown" claimed to be associated with a modeling agency to trick young girls into taking nude photographs.

Anyone solicited by men claiming to be those individuals is asked to contact Barr at (219) 874-3221, ext 324.

Chief Mark Swistek encouraged anyone with information about this or any crime to call the crime tip hotline at (219) 873-1488.

MICHIGAN CITY — The Michigan City Police Department has arrested Brian Newman, 46, Michigan City, on charges of manufacturing child pornography, possession of child pornography and child exploitation.

According to police, on May 22 at about 10 a.m., the FBI along with Michigan City detectives and members of the FBI task force served an arrest warrant on Newman, who was wanted on federal charges of dealing child pornography.

On May 29, Newman was processed and transported to the La Porte County jail awaiting transfer to South Bend for his initial hearing. The hearing was May 30, and Newman was read his charges and the possible penalties associated with them. His detainment hearing is forthcoming.

According to police, Newman’s arrest stems off a multi-jurisdictional investigation dating back to September 2011. Newman is being charged with manufacturing and possessing child pornography. Additional charges are expected, according to police. Several of Newman’s victims have already been found across the country, and it is believed that there are still more that have yet to be identified.

Detective Sgt. Matt Barr said the police department is considering doing some sort of national news release seeking information about more victims in the case. At this time, about a dozen individuals have been identified as victims and police believe there may be more. They believe the victims are in the United States and that the case doesn’t involve victims outside the country.

Michigan City Police are asking that anyone who was solicited by a “Jerome Moore” or “Deandre Moore” through the Internet contact Barr at (219) 874-3221, ext. 324. “Jerome Moore,” the alias of Newman, also worked with a second suspect using the alias of “Mark Brown.” The person with the alias of “Brown” claimed to be associated with a modeling agency to trick young girls.

According to Barr, the individual using the “Brown” alias used a fraudulent website to target young girls.

Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek and members of his department encourage anyone with crime information to call the crime tip hotline at (219) 873-1488.
