IC Baseball Signups

The Intra-City baseball league has signups coming up soon at the Safe Harbor Schools. Sign up on Feb. 20 at Mullen from 3:30 to 6 p.m., on Feb. 22 at Knapp from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m., on Feb. 27 at both Edgewood and Knapp from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. and on March 1 at both Joy and Mullen from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m.

There will also be signups at the Marquette Mall on Feb. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m., on Feb. 17 from noon to 3 p.m., on Feb. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Feb. 24 from noon to 3 p.m.

There will also be a booth at the Kids Day at the Michigan City YMCA .






It costs $35 for first child, $55 for two children and $75 for three or more, but there is a $10 discount if you signup and pay before the end of February.

LaPorte Little League

Registration will be taken on Feb 20-22 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the lower level of the Civic Auditorium at 1001 Ridge Street. Sign up for Little “L” League (ages 10-12), machine pitch (ages 8-9), junior softball (ages 10-12) and senior girls softball (ages 13-18).

These signups must be in by April 30, and new participants for Little “L” League and Softball should bring a birth certificate.

Also, T-Ball signups (ages 5-7) end on August 1.

The fee for all programs is $30 for the first child and $25 for each additional child, but beginning March 1 there will be a $10 late fee added for each child.

The Michigan City United Baseball Organization is conducting sign-ups for its spring/summer baseball leagues at the Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department's lakefront office in Washington Park from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The leagues are open to kids age 5-17 and teams will play up to a 12-game season, including a year-end double elimination tournament. All games will be played at Patriot Park or Coolspring Elementary School.

The entry fee is $10 per participant for T-Ball and $50 per participant for ages 8 and up, with discounts for multiple immediate family members. The deadline to sign up is March 17. For more information, call Jeremy at 873-1524.

In response to the question about two Baseball Leagues. I can only speak for the MCUBO Baseball League. Which incidently stands for Michigan City United Baseball Orginization. MCUBO was founded several years ago to bring all of the groups running baseball leagues together. At that time only the Coolspring Baseball League and the Michigan City Stars decided to join in the efforts. It is admistered by the Michigan City Park & Receration.

It has a recreation Baseball League and a also sponsors some Travel teams to play in various tournaments through out the Region. Its recreation league is played at Patriot Park, with some t-ball leagues at Coolspring.

There are tournaments at Patriot Park for any of these teams to enter. Some are World Series Qualifiers of which Patriot Park has (World Series) hosted the last several years. Some of the other tournaments are Recreation teams or Lower level travel teams. All of these events are first class events. I would be happy to share with you some of the emails I have received from all over the Midwest from teams that have participated.

I can remember about twenty years ago when I was involved with Babe Ruth Baseball, we depended on parent volunteers to help maintain the fields that were used through out the City.
We utilized several locations in the City including school sites. Teams would invade the Neighbor hood at about 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. They had to put with all the noise and traffic.

Do you ever remember as a young person wanting to use a playground park and the Park Maintenance staff arriving and dragging the field and striping it? Then when they would leave and would tell you to not use the field because it is now prepared for the baseball games later that night. Now that we have Patriot Park that problem has been eliminated, and the neighbor hood parks have been returned to the neighbor hood. I know I got off track here but just my thoughts.
