MICHIGAN CITY | Michigan City police on Friday were detaining a "person on interest" in connection with the homicide of a 24-year-old woman who lived on the Porter/LaPorte County line.

Simone Bush was found dead Friday morning by authorities at home at 675 County Line Road.

Investigators were waiting for the results of an autopsy before disclosing how Bush died.

However, Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek said Bush died a "wrongful death."

"It's being treated as a criminal matter at this time," Swistek said.

Police said the man being held arrived at the Michigan City Police Department about 6:30 a.m. Friday appearing despondent and covered in blood but wouldn't disclose what was wrong.

After speaking with family and friends of Bush, police went to a two-story home at 675 County Line Road, which is on Michigan City's far west side near Indiana State Prison.

Officers found Bush dead inside the home in the small, wooded neighborhood.

Police were not disclosing how or if the man being held is connected to Bush.

Swistek said the man was in a holding facility inside the police station but was not officially arrested or charged.

A decision on charges was awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

MICHIGAN CITY | Police arrested a 20-year-old Michigan City man Saturday in the shooting death of Simone Bush, 24, of Michigan City.

Brian Taylor, who may have been Bush's boyfriend, is facing a preliminary charge of murder, a Class A felony, an official said.

LaPorte County Prosecutor Bob Szilagyi said a preliminary charge was necessary to meet the requirement under Indiana statute of taking legal action against a crime suspect within 48 hours of detention.

Taylor reportedly showed up at 6:30 a.m. Friday at the Michigan City police station despondent, but unwilling to share what he was troubled over, police said.

After speaking with family members and friends of Bush, police went to her two-story home at 675 County Line Road near Indiana State Prison and found her deceased.

Authorities were not disclosing how many times she was shot or where until after the autopsy, which is expected Monday, Szilagyi said.

Had there not been a preliminary charge, Taylor would have been ordered released by Sunday while police continued to try and build a strong enough case against him, Szilagyi said.

"We're charging him to hold him," said Szilagyi, who noted formal charges likely will be sought as soon as Monday depending on progress made in the investigation.

He said a judge might be asked to authorize a lesser charge than murder while the findings are still being gathered and reviewed.

Szilagyi said Taylor, Bush, her grandparents and possibly others were in the home when the shooting happened. Police do not have a motive regarding what prompted the shooting.

"As far as we know, they may have been boyfriend/girlfriend. That's all we know," Szilagyi said of the connection between the suspect and victim.
