QUOTE LaPorte has experienced its second residential fire caused by the manufacture of meth in less than a month. Robert Depner III, 23, was arrested for dealing methamphetamine and neglect of a dependent. It's alleged Depner was cooking meth with his 18-month-old daughter when the Wednesday fire started about 5:30 p.m. inside an apartment on Country Lane Dr. on the city's east side. http://bit.ly/1Pkm2Ig QUOTE La PORTE — A traffic stop led to the arrests of a man and woman and the discovery of an inactive meth lab. https://local.nixle.com/alert/5577177/ QUOTE Indiana led the nation last year in the number of meth lab seizures, a new law enforcement report says. Whether the ranking is good news or bad news is difficult to determine. Law enforcement officials say it’s a bit of both. “The problem is growing, and we are seeing more meth labs. But there is also a lot of good police work being done,” said Sgt. Niki Crawford, head of the Indiana State Police methamphetamine division. “As far as how many labs are out there, we have nothing but anecdotal evidence. ... We have been third in the nation for the last three years. http://indy.st/1onmiKN Do you live near a meth lab? Find out: http://indy.st/1VxwRXZ _ _ _ |

LaPorte Co. police launch new anonymous tip website
Stan Maddux Times Correspondent LAPORTE — Anyone with information about possible drug activity can now leave an anonymous tip with LaPorte County police on a newly created website. The department is the latest to offer such an option also made available by the Porter County Sheriff's Office. LaPorte County Sheriff John Boyd said the addition of the crime tip website is another strategy that stems from the ongoing battle to curb drug activity locally and reflects the change in how more people communicate today. "It is very user friendly," Boyd said. The website can be accessed at www.lpmetro.com/Contact and users are instructed to leave information on a form provided on the webpage. The form contains areas for a person to list their name, telephone number and e-mail address, but that information is strictly optional. There's also an area at the bottom of the page to supply information about suspected drug dealing or abuse. Boyd said the hope is to generate more tips from people who do most of their communicating online and who have more trust providing information online as opposed to the telephone. "We have a lot of people that have just as easy access to a smartphone or a keyboard where they can send in their concerns or their observations in that manner," Boyd said. The drug tip hotline at (219) 325-9022 remains in service. Anonymous drug tips with Porter County can be left by going to the department's regular webpage then scrolling down and clicking on tips. Porter County police Sgt. Jamie Erow said tips can be left on a variety of crimes and it's heavily used. "We've had it for quite some time," said Erow. She said most tips involve the whereabouts of wanted individuals but a good supply of information about suspected drug activity comes in. People also have the option to remain anonymous or leave contact information to speak later with the police, she said. |
