Layton: Plan is to retire, but ‘never say never’

LA PORTE COUNTY — One day after Michigan City Area Schools board member Dr. Vidya Kora announced plans to enter the 2012 La Porte County commissioner race, current Commissioner Ken Layton says he still plans to retire at the end of his term, but left open the possibility he may change his mind.

Layton’s term expires in December 2012 and Kora, a Democrat, already has announced his candidacy for the position.

“I am still intending to retire,” Layton, a Republican, said, reiterating what he told other commissioners at a meeting in July. “But a wise old man once told me ‘never say never.’”

If December does mark the end of Layton’s political career, it will mark the conclusion of 46 years of public service to the county, he said.

Prior to being elected as one of three county commissioners in 2008, Layton spent four years as the county’s treasurer, eight as the auditor and another eight prior to that as sheriff.

For 29 years, he was a member of the La Porte County Sheriff Department, now renamed the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office.

“I truly love La Porte County,” Layton said. “It is very hard to make a decision to retire from any arena you’ve spent so much time in.”

So hard, in fact, he may not be retiring at all.

“I will have to discuss that with my wife before a final decision is made,” he said.

Layton says he has known Kora for a number of years and has “respect for him as a gentleman.

“I consider him to be a friend whether or not I decide to run again,” Layton said. “I would never say anything derogatory about Dr. Kora or anyone I have ever run against.”

Layton is one of three members of the La Porte County Commission. The other commissioners are Willie Milsap and Barbara Huston.

Layton retiring from LaPorte County politics

Ken Layton is retiring from a 46-year career with LaPorte County government.

Layton, 65, chose not to seek election to a second term on the LaPorte County Board of Commissioners.

"It's bittersweet. I love this county and the people that's in it," Layton said.

Layton started as a deputy with the LaPorte County Sheriff's Department then served as sheriff from 1987 to 1994.

He also served as county auditor and county treasurer before elected commissioner.

LaPorte County Councilman Terry Garner and Ron Kniola of Westville are seeking the Republican nomination for the District 3 seat now held by Layton.

Michigan City School Board member Dr. Vidya Kora is unopposed for the Democratic nomination for the seat.
