I am waiting for the official word, but it sounds like I am going to do the morning drive this Monday morning the 20th with Ric, sitting in for Craig. I hope everyone listens, calls and/or emails. There should be plenty to talk about so tune in to WIMS 1420 am or stream it at WIMSradio.com

Hey, very cool! Pardon me for not knowing, but is WIMS still broadcast out of Michigan City? I tried looking at their website and it seems to be that Ric is the only local?

How I miss the days of WIM...S.

Ric does a morning show along with his co-host, Craig Koepke, and the aftrnoon drive is Paula Griffin with (radio hall of famer) John Records Landecker. In addition, thre's a great hunting/fishing/camping show hosted by Craig & Ryan Koepke that airs on Thursday evenings called "Into the Outdoors". All three shows are done at the studio on Old Chicago Road.

Did I miss anything, Johnny Rush?

Well...Landecker has lived in Michigan City for years and does our afternoons, we also have Brian Brophy from MC doing a Sunday show called Living Sober, and for the past two years Adam Parkhouse of the News Dispatch has been doing our sports broadcasting of Michigan City high school games. We have a couple of more weekend shows that we are developing with local talent...but I cannot get into details with the "major leagues" watching...but we are constantly expanding and adding more programming. We also have a handful of local people that cover news stories/meetings for us and report back...

If you wanted to sample any of our local programmings, check our website and you can hear some of the podcasts http://www.wimsradio.com/listen4.php

Outstanding! Last I heard, which was several years ago, I'm sure, WIMS was no longer local? I just couldn't believe it. So, I'm so glad to hear that it still has life.

I remember the days of listening to the church service choir on Sunday mornings, followed by the Polka Party.

I'll be sure to check out some of the podcasts!

Oh yeah, it was mentioned in this thread... Sox fans??!? CARDINALS FANS??!?!?!? Where are my fellow Cubbie fans??? smile.gif

lol @ the "major leagues". I've got my own major league's going on right here, that I am quite proud of. This is the best line up in town because it includes anyone and everyone. No one else can say that.

As for WIMS, they might not be the biggest in town, but they have a great operation, and they have given me a couple of great opportunities to dabble in some of my favorite things, including broadcasting basketball. Ric, Johnny, and the rest of the gang run a first class operation over there, and to me that is more important than just about anything else.

"it includes anyone and everyone.....they have given me a couple of great opportunities to dabble in some of my favorite things". Congratulations...entry level radio is where we all started. Unfortunately with consolidation, there are few such opportunities.

Its perfect for me because I have no desire to go anywhere in radio. I had job offers coming out of college for it, and turned them all down. I enjoy it, but I never had the interest in making a career out of it. For me, the financial sector has always held my heart professionally. I enjoy broadcasting in my hometown, and about my hometown. I can't ask for anything more. Besides with John Landecker doing essentially the samething, I have pretty good company smile.gif

Maybe you can become the next Consuelo Mack or Louis Rukeyser. Do you ever attend in-person or via internet or phone tree the various seminars on financial matters put on by the University of Chicago? Many are available after the fact on the Graduate School of Business web site.

I know it's a moot point since the people involved with these boards (whether participating or simply reading) are some of the more media savvy people I have run across and have more than likely sampled all of the local media from print to radio to television to internet...but I just wanted to clarify that WIMS is not really a minor league, entry level radio station. I would put up the WIMS resumes against any other "small market" radio station.

Ric Federighi does mornings and has worked on the WLS morning show, did weekends on the LOOP, DJ'd on the WABBIT, ran WJOB, serviced nearly all Chicago/NW Indiana radio stations when he was spearheading Shadow Metro traffic and has had a variety of television work including PBS

John Landecker, is pretty obvious, he is in the radio wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and has been named a Billboard Magazine Personality of the Year...I don't need to break down his radio career...

I have worked with Kevin Mathews at 'CKG, been an Executive Producer for WLUP on their public affairs programming, was Program Director at WJOB and worked with the Region Sports Network doing High School Sports for a couple of years

Paula Griffin worked for years at a small time local lite rock station, but took advantage of that time to get involved with the community and continue to hone her skills and has been a local staple for years before moving up to WIMS

Ski Anderson does his WIMS specific show and worked weekends at WLS with the Ski and Skinner show

Craig Koepke spent a year and a half with us before being ready to co-anchor the morning show and during that time we started him with a pre-recorded one hour a week hunting and camping show while he learned, then he took the hour live, then expanded to two hours, then became a part of mornings...it was a long, learning intensive process...not just an entry level radio opportunity

Brian Brophy has been with us two years and we are developing some new things with him as we continue to work with him on broadcasting...his Living Sober Radio Show actually won a state-wide award for broadcasting while he continues to work on some on-air ideas. A&E Television has been impressed enough with his ability to constantly provide guests and invited him out to New York to cover a huge event that they have planned.

We all have had opportunities to be elswhere but really believe in what we have going on here in Michigan City and are excited each day about the challenges and developments happening locally. We are attempting to eliminate the stigma that "local radio" or "small market radio" somehow means sub-standard radio. We are only bringing in the highest quality local broadcasters, and I refuse to believe that just because you are listening to "local radio" it means that you have to accept anything less...

A LOT of it depends on the callers, and I ADORE the people that regularly participate in morning and afternoon drives...the combination of information, opinion and humor injected by our listeners is really what drives WIMS. We love being your open forum to talk...

I'm done venting, I just know that a lot of people come across this board looking for information, and I would hate to have a few snide comments from a biased poster taint their opinion on what we have to offer...

John: You need not feel defensive about providing the local training facility. That is a service to the industry. I look back with pride to a young man from Beverly Shores who years ago I training before he became Larry King's producer. The News Dispatch interviewed him and he gave us credit for helping launch that career. There was also a young lady from Michigan City who went on to work at a major Los Angeles station.

Hmmm...wouldn't that make WEFM more of the "training facility"? Seems to me that WIMS has quite an experienced staff working on their locally produced shows.

No disrespect, Mr. Burns, but this is neither the time nor the place for cheap shots. Both stations have different formats, and each has their own audience (obviously, there are enough folks around who prefer one over the other). Let's play nice, shall we?
