Police Looking For Leads In Robbery

MICHIGAN CITY - Wednesday morning, city police were still searching for leads into the armed robbery of Domino's Pizza, 2316 Franklin St., on Tuesday evening.

Shortly before 8 p.m. police received a call that someone was robbing Domino's and the two suspects were still inside the business. The caller said he was calling from AJ's Bar, across Franklin Street from the pizzeria.

Police later learned it was an employee of Domino's who had slipped out a back door and placed the call.

When Officer Mark Raymond arrived, the two robbers had already left Domino's. Raymond said a 28-year-old delivery driver for Domino's told him that he had just returned to the store and saw two men standing in the lobby.

"I went directly past them to the register area," the driver told Raymond. "Then I heard the two men mumbling and asked if they needed help."

The driver told police he noticed the two had on face masks and that both were dressed in dark or black baggy clothing. Police said one of the men was wearing yellow gloves.

One of the robbers then told the driver, "Give us the money," while the one with the gloves pulled a silver handgun from a pocket and pointed it at the driver.

Raymond reported that the driver reached over to the register and opened the cash drawer.

While this was happening, a 24-year-old employee who was in the back making pizzas heard what was happening and slipped out a back door. Police said as the employee made his way to the front of the business he saw the man with the yellow gloves pull a gun from a pocket and point it at his co-worker.

Raymond said that after opening the cash drawer, the driver said he moved away from the register and when he turned back the two had left and taken cash from the register.

"I saw them exit the front and head east on Greenwood," he told police. "They were not running and seemed to be walking at a normal speed."

When additional officers arrived, they conducted a search but found few leads.

The manager of Domino's had been in the office working and told police he heard nothing and did not know of the robbery until police arrived.

An employee of Apex Muffler, located next to Domino's, told police he was sleeping in a camper on the property to keep an eye on cars there and saw a vehicle in the alley between the two business that had people inside. He also told police he saw two men dressed in dark or black clothing walking away from Domino's shortly before police arrived.
