MCPD Sees Several Command Changes

MICHIGAN CITY - Michigan City Police Chief Ben Neitzel announced that on Jan. 1 he implemented several command changes in the department.

"During the year we had seven officers retire and we lost one duty officer with his recent death," Neitzel said. "Most of the changes have been lateral with a few exceptions."

Neitzel said the department has hired several new officers, who are still finishing their training or are waiting to attend the Indiana Police Academy.

"Several of the changes that were made were done so the officers involved would not 'burn out,'" the chief said.

"They have served in these positions for nearly four and a half years, and they are high-pressure roles," he said. "In assessing the department, it was the aim to keep the department and the officer healthy."

• Capt. Tom Howe, who has been commander of the Detective Bureau, has been named commander of Uniform Shift II.

• Lt. Sue Harrison has transferred from the Division of Professional Standards to the Detective Bureau where she will assume the position of commander.

• Sgt. Matt Zolvinski will remain in the Detective Bureau Juvenile Division where he will become commander.

• Sgt. Mark Krauklis is leaving the Traffic Division to serve in the Division of Professional Standards.

• Cpl. Alton Bush has transferred from the Drug Task Force to the Detective Bureau.

• Cpl. David Legros will remain in the Drug Task Force where he will assume the commander's position.

• Cpl. Jeffery Loniewski will remain in the Traffic Division where he will become commander.

• Officer Dion Campbell has transferred from Uniform Shift I to the School Liaison Division where he will report to Zolvinski.

There also have been several uniform officer shift changes between the three shifts.

"We felt it was necessary to make these changes to have better coverage of the different districts," Neitzel said.

"Presently we are at around 80 to 81 officers on duty," the chief said. "Our rookies will soon be ready to be on the streets to complement patrol duty."
