The military

Flags would be flown at half-staff for 24 hours at the Indiana Capitol to honor each Indiana member of the military who is killed while on active duty, under Senate Bill 56. The bill was approved 7-0 by the Senate Commerce, Public Policy and Interstate Cooperation committee and is awaiting a vote by the full Senate.

Sen. Brent Waltz, the Greenwood Republican who authored the bill, said he realized after last year's death of fellow Sen. Anita Bowser, D-Michigan City, that flags are lowered to honor lawmakers, but not service members who die. They have put their lives on the line, he said, and deserve the honor.

I think it's cool that they want to do that, but will the flags fly half-staff every time a service member dies in combat, or will they pick one day to honor them all?

Wouldn't it be flying everyday? I think it's a morbid reminder of the mess that Dubya has gotten us in.

That would be my concern for this plan. Would we cheapen the flag at half staff? It should be a rare occurence in my opinion. If it was at half staff everyday, would people even notice it anymore?

I think someone ought to sponsor a bill to have the flag at the state capitol flying at half staff, inverted, until January 20, 2009.

I think it should be left that way until we get some folks in office who bother to look at the constitution..
