MICHIGAN CITY - The winner of the race for La Porte County Clerk of the Circuit Court was Democrat Lynne Spevak, who maintained a comfortable lead throughout the evening over Republican challenger Keith Harris.
Spevak, 46, was at Democratic headquarters in La Porte at 8 p.m. and said she was "feeling very relaxed." She was already thinking like the county clerk by wondering what the final voter turnout would be.
By the time the final vote totals were announced just before midnight, Spevak's confidence was justified. She received 28,909 votes to 15,185 for Harris.
Spevak served as county clerk for two terms, from January 1998 through December 2005. Harris, 51, was running for his first county position.
At Republican headquarters at Silver Palace, Harris didn't concede until all the votes were tallied.
Harris said he expected the vote to be close but, he said "the voters have spoken."
Spevak will not take office until 2010 and complete a three-year term. The county clerk position is the last of the so-called hold-over offices eliminated by the state legislature. The clerk oversees the work of 32 full-time employees in five offices.
