LA PORTE - The Democrats swept the three open at-large seats on the La Porte County Council in Tuesday's election.

Matthew Bernacchi, Lois Sosinski and Scott Ford beat out four other opponents: Republicans Cary Kirkham, Roger Wolff and Geoffrey Sellers and Libertarian Mark Steven Lindborg.

Bernacchi led all council candidates with 26,124 votes. Ford had 23,993 votes and Sosinski had 23,945 votes.

Among Republicans, Wolff had 16,151 votes, Kirkham 14,533 and Sellers 13,981. Lindborg received 6,741 votes.

Ford said there were strong Democratic trends in La Porte County for the council candidates.

"We had a very good group of people," he said.

Wolff said the campaign went well, but the public made its choice.

"I'm happy with what I did," he said. "At this point in time, the public has spoken."

Ford said he will use his seat on the council to focus on economic development and bring in high-paying jobs.

"It's critical, it's just critical," he said.

Bernacchi said he wanted to get the county straightened out. He wants to look over the budget and prioritize county projects. Bernacchi also said the council will have a better working relationship with the County Commission.

"The commission and council are going to start working together instead of against each other," Bernacchi said.

Sosinski, who previously served a term on the council, said she was excited by the results. A bookkeeper and accountant, she said she was "cautiously optimistic" about the outcome during the evening. Sosinski said she wants to catch up on the past two years she was not on the council to be ready "to hit the ground running in January."

Lindborg said he didn't have unrealistic expectations for the election. He wanted the people who voted Libertarian to not give up, because the party isn't going to give up on them.
