Bowser hospitalized in Indianapolis
By Jason Miller, The News-Dispatch
State Sen. Anita Bowser is expected to be released from an Indianapolis hospital today after spending a few days recovering from a bout of dehydration.
According to Senate Democratic spokeswoman Laura Bauman, Bowser became very dehydrated last week in the Senate and was taken to the Indiana University/Purdue University-Indianapolis Medical Center for treatment.
Bauman said Bowser has missed “a few votes” during the current session of the Indiana General Assembly, but couldn't say how many votes.
Senate Democrats were going to release a statement on Bowser's condition Monday, but release of that statement was been postponed until Bowser's discharge from the hospital.
Bowser has served in the Senate since 1992, and was a state representative from January through November of 1980 and November 1982 until the spring of 1992.
A constitutional scholar and professor emerita at Purdue University, Bowser's current term expires in 2008.
She is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Pensions & Labor Committee and also is on the Judiciary Committee, the Corrections, Criminal & Civil Matters Committee, the Ethics Committee, and Education and Career Development Committee.
As a member of the General Assembly, Bowser was the first woman to act as house speaker (deputy speaker pro-tempore) in the state's history.
Among the honors she has receive are the Louis Inglehart Award for Freedom of Expression, the Amnesty International Abolitionist of the Year Award and the Robert Dole Owen Legislator Award from the Indiana Civil Liberties Union twice.
Bowser received her bachelor's degree from Kent State University, a law degree from McKinley School of Law, a master's degree from Purdue University and master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Notre Dame.
