I felt sick reading this in the New-Dispatch. Is there really this sort of sentiment in our community? Scary. sad.gif

Here's the article in question.

I'd offer a comment, but it's difficult to do so without the benefit of swear words, which I try to not use on this site.

Woman discovers noose in tree at Fedder's Alley

Deborah Sederberg
The News-Dispatch

MICHIGAN CITY - Roxie Fletcher touches her hands to her neck and throat as she looks up at the noose in the tree in Fedder's Alley.

"You can just feel it around your neck," the Michigan City woman said.

Like most blacks, Fletcher understands the noose as a threat and sign of hatred.

Fletcher noticed the noose late last week when she was relaxing in her SUV with the sun roof open, looking up at the sky and trees on the lake side of Fedder's Alley.

She was enjoying the day until the noose invaded her consciousness. Fletcher said she found it difficult to believe what she was seeing.

Park Superintendent Jan Orlich, who became aware of the noose Tuesday, is surprised at how high in the tree it is located.

"It must be up 60 or 70 feet," she said.

She was going to try to engage the Fire Department's cooperation in removing it.

Fletcher said she remembers a time when blacks were unwelcome in Fedder's Alley and seeing the noose caused her to think again of those unhappy times.

What's more, she said, "Just seeing it brought flashes of the history of slavery to my mind."

Recent noose complaints are numerous enough that an organization called DiversityInc has launched an online NooseWatch initiative. Long recognized as a symbol of hate and even threats directed at blacks, the noose has made a resurgence since the election of President Barack Obama, according to CNN and Los Angeles Times online articles.

The noose symbol comes from a brutal time in American history during which blacks might be lynched for even the smallest real or imagined offense.

The last confirmed lynching of black men in the northern United States was on Aug. 7, 1930, in Marion, Ind., when two black men, who had been dragged from jail, were hanged from two trees, according to an Indiana University online site.

it did make me think of that einstein quote someone on here has: The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has limits.

You know - I was reading this on my cell phone on the train - my contacts aren't working real well for reading - took some reading to realize this lady didn't see a moose in that tree.

True story.

For some odd reason, Tim--I believe you. wink.gif

As for the stupid kids looking for attention -- I should think the kind of attention this would get them, should their identities become known, would be the kind of attention they really didn't want. Being branded a pinheaded racist &&)%$#% at age 16 is generally not a good career choice.
