Boy arrested on 4 charges after fight at MCHS
MICHIGAN CITY - A Michigan City high school student was arrested on four charges Monday after he struck a girl in the mouth twice, then fought with the school liaison police officer, according to a police report.

The officer was injured when his right elbow struck a doorknob during a fracas in a principal's office trying to handcuff the youth, the report said. The girl suffered a bloody lip.

The boy, age 17, was charged with two counts of battery, one a Class D felony and the other a Class A misdemeanor, as well as resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct, according to a police report.

Officer James Glasgow, who is assigned to the high school, reported that at 12:45 p.m. a fight broke out in the cafeteria. He rushed there and found a large group of students, many of them yelling. Three who were trying to fight were being held back by other students and teachers, he reported.

They were taken to separate rooms, he said, and he escorted the one who struck the girl to an assistant principal's office. There the boy pulled away, shoved him and kept moving around the office in an attempt to keep from being handcuffed, Glasgow said. During a struggle that lasted one to two minutes, he injured his elbow on the door knob.

The student finally stopped resisting when the assistant principal arrived and ordered him to cease resisting, the officer said.

Other police took the youth to the police station for booking.

Two other girls who had been involved in the fight were not arrested, but released from their handcuffs to be disciplined by school officials, according to the report.
