MICHIGAN CITY — Three Knapp Elementary School students were suspended after beating a 7-year-old boy in the restroom Tuesday morning, according to police reports.

The police report was filed by the boy’s mother, not the school district.

The mother told police she received a call at 10:22 a.m. Tuesday from a secretary that her son was battered in school, and the boys responsible for it had been suspended and sent home. The mother spoke to him briefly and allowed him to stay at school for the rest of the day because he seemed OK.

However, she brought her son to the police department at 7:50 p.m. after she talked to him about what happened and saw his injuries. The students who attacked him were in second, third and fifth grades, the boy told police. During the fight, the boy was pushed on the floor and punched in the stomach, and the other students attempted to put his head into a urinal. Once the fight left the bathroom, the 7-year-old was slammed on the floor before everyone scattered. The boy then reported the fight to the same secretary who later called the mother.

Police took pictures of red marks on the boy’s neck and a small bruise on his upper back that were a result of the attack.

This was not the first time her son was bullied, the mother told police.

When called about the situation Wednesday, the mother said she was upset about it, but had no further comment at this time.

School officials have the option of filing police reports when students get into fights, said Betsy Kohn, Michigan City Area Schools communication director. It just depends on the situation.
