Here's some Q&A's about Michigan City, Indiana from Yahoo Answers:

Q. Why is Michigan City called that even though it's in Indiana?

A. It is named after Lake Michigan, not the state
(by the way, the word 'michigan' means lake, so Lake Michigan means lake lake)

Q. What are the steaming, large towers located on the shore of Lake Michigan outside of Michigan City?
These steaming towers look like nuclear energy units, but I've read that Indiana does not have any nuclear reactors. They are located just behind Mount Baldy on the shores of Lake Michigan in Michigan City,Indiana.

A. It's a cooling tower all right, but not a nuclear one. Just a lookalike. The power plant is actually coal. It's called the NIPSCO Coal Power Plant:

"When you make this left, you should be staring right at a cooling tower for the coal energy plant (this has been mistaken for a nuclear tower by many, including me, until I learned the truth).

""All that changed when the city bosses agreed to let NIPSCO, the regional power company, build a huge, coal burning plant right at the harbor’s mouth. What was once a great attraction became an eyesore. The problem was compounded when, in the 1970s, NIPSCO added a Three Mile Island-style cooling tower. It’s not unusual to hear newcomers say they had no idea there was a nuclear plant in Michigan City."

A. it's a nuclear power plant

A. Chicago is about an hour away from there but there is a casino in Michigan City. There are some nice areas and some really run down areas in Michigan City.

A. I don't know about living there but in michigan city there's a huge outdoor outlet mall. they have Coach, Tommy Hilfiger and other brands for a cheaper price.
It's called Light house place.

Q. Looking for factory work in michigan city indiana?
i have more than 8 years in factory work . i am looking for employment

A. Better take any job you can find right now...M-City really not a factory Mecca and work is getting really scarcest all over northwest Indiana. Most factory and more go thur employment agencies so start by signing up with a few of them

A. Best of luck...really....times are tough here in the Hoosier....only worse to the east of Michigan City......

Q. Teaching job in Michigan City Indiana?
Hi, I have been offered a teaching job in Michigan City Indiana. Has anyone had any teaching experience at this school system? I realize there is a diverse population. I'm wondering about administration, unions, insurance, pay, safety, etc. Thanks

A. My husband lived there before we were married and I myself have checked openings there. I didn't mind the area at all, and from the data I've read about them, they're fairly comparable to the other cities/towns in the area.

You can find their school data at http://www.doe.in.gov, and that tells you about the average teacher salary and such. The details about administration, insurance and unions would have to come from someone within the system.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

According to eMichiganCity.com, "The town was named after the road leading up to Lake Michigan." Which is what I've known for many years.

That's probably true. But who was here first? It was the Pokagon band of the Potowatami Indian tribe who were the original inhabitants, we merely settled here and took their land away from them. The Potowatami signed away their land with the treaty of Chicago in 1821 and the United States government removed the Indians by force and onto a reservation in Kansas.

The word "Michigan" is derived from the Algonquin word "Michi-gama" which means great water or lake, so Michigan City means "Lake City" so in a way the person who responded to the question on Yahoo Answers is correct. Heck, What is now Elston Middle School was constructed atop of a Potowatami Indian burial ground, they are still excavating old Indian bones from that site to this very day.

On a side note, The Potowatami's main food source was the American Bison which were once plentiful around here and which were also all killed off by our Government, it's evident, just check out the official seal of the state of Indiana, it depicts a white Hoosier settler hunting a Buffalo with an Axe!!! ohmy.gif
