MICHIGAN CITY — Indiana Youth Institute will receive a jazzy welcome Wednesday at the opening of the new Stony Gardens restaurant inside Marquette Mall.

Jazz guitar legend George Freeman, Chicago, will help raise funds for IYI, a nonprofit organization that promotes healthy youth development.

Freeman will lead the Great Lakes Jazz Collective on Wednesday, kicking off a series of four weekly Wednesday night jazz shows at the new venue.

Admission is $10, with shows running from 8 to 11 p.m. Guests are encouraged to make reservations at www.iyi.org/rsvp.

All proceeds from the event directly benefit IYI.

Freeman has recorded with many prominent jazz artists during his 70-year career, including Charlie Parker and Lester Young.

“We wanted to make our opening special, and we believe we’ve accomplished that in two ways,” Stony Garden general manager Stephanie Hardin said in a press release. “To have George Freeman and other talented jazz artists grace our stage is a treat for music fans. And by supporting IYI, we are ensuring this organization continues to provide support to youth workers and youth serving agencies right here in Northwest Indiana.”

Stony Gardens serves gourmet woodfire turkey, its Michigan City facility doubling as a banquet hall and live music venue.
