A man who was found unresponsive in the water off Washington Park Beach at about 5:22 p.m. Thursday was upgraded from critical to stable condition on Friday.

Michigan City Police said a couple of people swimming just off the Washington Park Beach discovered Crispin Salgado, 46, 4160 Lincoln St., Gary, unresponsive in the water.

When they saw he was not breathing, a woman who, with her fiancé, had found the man, began to administer CPR and Michigan City Police Officers Jason Cracknell and Steve Forker assisted with chest compressions, according to a police report.

The man spit up water and weeds, the report indicated, but did not regain consciousness.

Salgado was taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health, where he was treated in the emergency room and then taken to the intensive care unit, where he was initially listed in critical condition, according to police records. Early Friday afternoon, however, he was listed in stable condition, according to a hospital spokesman.
