Citywide school-supply drive under way

MICHIGAN CITY — Eleven local organizations have announced a community-wide school-supply drive that runs through Aug. 10, with all items collected distributed to area students needing materials to start the school year.

Many area businesses, including major retailers such as Walmart, Office Depot, Al’s and Jewel-Osco, will provide collection bins to accept donations from their employees and the general public. Additional collection sites are at First Trust Credit Union, Horizon Bank, the Michigan City Area Schools Administration Building, Captain Ed’s Candy Island, City Hall, The News Dispatch and WIMS Radio.

Supplies also may be brought to Elston Middle School’s Meer Gym from 9 a.m to 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10.

Suggested donations include: pencils, black pens, crayons (24 count), spiral notebooks (wide or college rule), dry erase markers, glue sticks, glue bottles, pink erasers, scissors (blunt and sharp tipped), pencil boxes, two-pocket folders, antibacterial wipes, facial tissues, backpacks (new or gently used), small Ziploc sandwich bags, colored pencils, rulers, highlighters, composition books, small pencil sharpeners, calculators, markers (washable), three-hole notebook paper and three-ring binders/organizers.

Supplies will be distributed during a citywide back-to-school rally from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at Elston Middle School. This year, the rally’s organizing committee includes representatives from Indiana Black Expo, the La Porte County NAACP, MDWise, Covering Kids and Families La Porte County, El Puente, the City of Michigan City, Shaka-hand Maka-friend, Michigan City Area Schools, Deliverance and Victory Outreach Ministries, HealthLinc and Purdue University-North Central. Media partners include The News-Dispatch, WIMS radio (AM1420) and WEFM radio (95.9FM).

Youth invited to audition for talent show

MICHIGAN CITY — Children and teens interested in participating in a talent show at the Aug. 12 citywide back-to-school rally are invited to audition between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, July 29, at H.O.P.E., 222 McClelland Ave.

Acts may include any number of performers, but should be no longer than five minutes. Prizes will be awarded in several categories. All acts at the rally must audition in advance. Contact the Rev. Vera Roberts at (314) 659-0036 for additional information.
