INDIANAPOLIS — As 12 of the best drum corps in the world were eager to take the field for the final time in 2011 at Saturday evening's World Class Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium, Drum Corps International (DCI) officials in Indianapolis were recognizing Michigan City and Mayor Chuck Oberlie for the major role the city played in the 2011 DCI season.

Ames Field was the host site of both a World Class show on July 2 and the Open Class Championships Aug. 8 and 9.

Prior to the World Class Championships, Oberlie was on the field with Dan Acheson, DCI executive director.

Public Address announcer Brant Crocker, the "voice" of DCI, said Tuesday night's 18-corp finals round was "one big day-long celebration of drum corps."

To a crowd of thousands, he described how Monday's preliminary round in Michigan City was rained out and all shows were performed on Tuesday.

"DCI would like to thank Charles Oberlie, the mayor of Michigan City for his help in coordinating our kickoff of world championship events," he said.

Oberlie was then greeted by Acheson before other awards were given to specific drum corps.

The city was mentioned many times at Saturday night's event.

Other than Indianapolis, Michigan City was the only city recognized at the championship event for its participation with DCI.
