Two Michigan City teens are in the Lake County Juvenile Center, accused of carjacking.

Indiana State Police say it happened around 7:45 last night in Michigan City. The victim wasn't hurt.

About an hour later, police got a call about an erratic driver on I-80 in Lake County. A Trooper stopped the suspect vehicle just west of Cline Avenue. The trooper says the vehicle took off when he approached it.

Police say the trooper had just terminated pursuing the vehicle when it ran up on a curve at 165th and Kennedy and the 3 occupants fled the vehicle. The trooper chased after the driver, but lost him about three blocks from the car. A perimeter was set up and a K-9 called in, but the driver was not found.

Police say the other two occupants of the vehicle, a 14 and 15 year old, ran to a residence on 164th Place in Hammond. Police say a legally armed man was walking his dog and saw what was going on and stopped the two while a neighbor called police.

Police say the 14 and 15 year old will have an initial hearing on charges of Resisting Law Enforcement, Criminal Trespassing, and Armed Carjacking, on Monday.

Cops: carjacking suspects stopped by armed homeowner
November 20, 2011|By Peter Nickeas | Tribune reporter

Two carjacking suspects on the run from Indiana State Police encountered an armed homeowner when they tried to hide in his backyard Saturday, according to police.

Then, they stopped running.

Hammond police took them into custody in the man's backyard near 164th Place and Kennedy Avenue in Hammond's Hessville neighborhood, police said.

The two, aged 14 and 15, were in a green 1999 Toyota 4Runner that Indiana State Police tried to pull over just before 9 p.m. Saturday because it was traveling erratically in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80, according to a release from the Indiana State Police.

The 4Runner, later reported stolen by Michigan City police, took off after an Indiana State Trooper approached the stopped car near the Cline Avenue exit, the release said.

The state trooper stopped his pursuit because of traffic after the vehicle had exited on northbound Kennedy Avenue. But the vehicle ran up onto a curb ay 165th and Kennedy and three occupants jumped out and started running, police said.

The trooper chased the driver as he ran southwest, but he escaped and hasn't been located.

The other two individuals fled northbound and ended up in the yard of a man who was outside walking his dog and had seen what was happening. The man had his gun, which police said he was legally licensed to carry, and after seeing that, the two teens lay down on the ground and stayed there until Hammond police arrived.

The two teens, both from Michigan City, were both charged with criminal trespassing, resisting law enforcement and armed carjacking, police said.

They're expected in court Monday. Police said all three are believed to be gang members.

Michigan City police declined to comment on the carjacking.
